World Bank Addresses Threat of Out-of-School Children in Katsina

The Universal Basic Education Board of Katsina State (SUBEB) said it carried out interventions in the state's basic education sector worth $21 million between 2019 and 2022, as part of the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) program.

Alhaji Lawal Buhari Daura, the State Executive Chairman of SUBEB, revealed this during a press briefing as the program ends in October 2022, which was held at the Council headquarters in Katsina.

Daura explained that BESDA is a World Bank intervention program aimed at supporting states with the highest number of out-of-school children.

According to him, BESDA works in three result areas: increasing equitable access, improving literacy and strengthening the system.

He maintained that Katsina State was identified as one of the 17 BESDA target states after being assessed with the highest number of out-of-school children of 1,135,000, which includes Almajiris, nomads , internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable children. .

"The implementation of the program began in 2019 with the selection of 22 LGAs for the reduction of the number of out-of-school children and 13 LGAs for the intensive literacy program using the RANA model and Jolly Phonics", he added.

The Executive Chairman of the Board pointed out that BESDA during the reporting period achieved record achievements and successes as 255 Quranic centers were integrated by the program.

Similarly, he said the program was successful in reducing the number of out-of-school children by 361,525, which is 36% of the target set in selected LGAs in the state.

He however expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government through UBEC for providing the grants to develop the basic education sector and called on the World Bank through the FG to consider extend the program beyond October this year.

Daura also praised Governor Aminu Bello Masari for supporting the council in developing the basic education sector, noting that the program has had a significant impact on the lives of citizens.
