World Cup video: Peter Drury's comment on Lionel Messi's goal gives chills

Argentina kept their World Cup dreams alive with a nervy 2-0 win over Mexico on Saturday night, with Lionel Messi breaking all the tension with the opening goal - and Peter Drury seized the moment perfectly.

After suffering a humiliating 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in their World Cup opener, Argentina needed a win over Mexico to maintain their chances of qualifying for the round of 16 of the competition.

But Mexico also needed a result to keep their campaign on track and the first 45 minutes at the Lusail Stadium, which will host the final in December 2018, were almost painful to watch.

As the match headed for a scoreless stalemate which would have left Argentina needing snookers to advance to the last 16, Messi popped up with a magnificent long-range effort that flew past Guillermo Ochoa in the Mexican goal.

The release of tension was palpable as thousands of Argentines inside the stadium let out a cathartic roar as their talisman ran everywhere in celebration.

Drury's commentary was equally moving; as the ball slammed into the goal, he exclaimed: “Lionel Messi! Oh, that's what they came for. The magic man. One more Messi moment and Argentina are alive."

The camera then filmed in slow motion Argentinian fans celebrating their captain's first game, to which Drury added: "They are thankful that he is one of them.

"How many times did they say that prayer of thanks? How many times did we see those big shining eyes? How many times did we see the faces of the adversaries, the dismay that he came to frighten them?"

Things that give chills. Argentina need a result against Poland to confirm their passage to the next round although, as we have seen in this World Cup, nothing is certain.

Except the brilliance of Messi and Drury who lifts the opportunity with him.
