Would an England World Cup win in Qatar be despite Gareth Southgate?

It was "rancid" and "expensive" according to a "fickle moron". The Mailbox reacts to England 0-0 USA with a few more tips…

Southgate "must go" Well, that was Rancid. Laborious. Turgid. Expensive.

Gareth Southgate did well to get this team to a semi-final and a final, but just like Belgium and their generation of players, we could and should do a lot more with the players at our disposal.

We have never been convincing in a tournament under Southgate, except for the 4-0 hammering of Ukraine. We've beaten Colombia, Denmark, Sweden and Germany in all our knockout games under him, and worked in the recent Nations League.

He has to go. There is no excuse for playing such sour, lifeless and negative football that Alex McLeish would be proud of. We can all be excited about the game against Iran, but that was the exception, not the rule. It's always safety first, there's no one carrying the ball or playing through the lines, it's always a safe pass backwards or forwards.

There's no way we'll win this tournament. Imagine trying not to lose a game, where a win guarantees you advancement to the next round.Mat, Leeds

The fickle moronsI was very, very confident that England would draw 0-0 tonight. I was also convinced that I would be so fickle morons who would hate Southgate afterwards. Do people watch international tournaments?! France in 2018 was absolutely abysmal in the groups and very difficult to watch. Germany in 2014 was not the best either. They scraped past USA and Algeria and drew with Ghana that year. Spain in 2010 lost their first game and won most of their games by one goal. Do people honestly think you have to win every game 2-0, 3-0. Imagine if England drew 0-0 for their second Euro game. There's no way they'll continue to have a successful tournament afterwards… Oh wait.

Honestly, I have to question the age of some of the morons who want Southgate out. Do people remember how shitty England was before him. This idea that he is holding England back is bizarre. They tried everything before him and were appalling. I know for a fact that if England win people will say it's despite the manager. It's more than ridiculous at this point. I want him to go away and go back to failing to qualify for tournaments, getting knocked out by Iceland or even not getting out of his squad. No more semi-finals or finals deserved.Dion, Arsenal

England v LiverpoolWhile watching England play, I realized that I only really got interested once Henderson was on the pitch. It made me think, how much more do I like Liverpool than England?

For example: Would I rather Liverpool win the Premier League or England win the World Cup? No contest, Liverpool win the Premier League every time. Champions League or World Cup? Easy, champions league. A cup ? Yeah. Ligue's cup ? Yeah. A game against man utd? Still yes. A game against Man City? Yeah. A game against any Premier League team? Yes, I'd rather see Liverpool win a game against any Premier League team than see England win the World Cup.

Now don't get me wrong. I would love to see England win the World Cup. Not as much as seeing Liverpool win a game in the Premier League. Or any other game other than a friendly match. Is this unique for Liverpool fans? Or do other fans feel the same way about their team? Peter LFC Namibia

A World Cup mehÌ was in my thoughts over the past week in Buenos Aires. Now, on a long layover in Mexico before the final leg to Ontario, I've found time to browse through the mailbox.

My observations were similar to AL (No Flag On The Play).

I can tell firsthand that Buenos Aires, at least, isn't thrilled with this toilet. I saw more dogs wearing albiceste jerseys than people. It was largely a non-event. Granted, that may change if they face Brazil in a knockout tie. Mexico don't seem too bothered either (just watched England v USA here).

It seems to me that people all over the world have had enough of FIFA and are definitely not engaged this time around.

Maybe it's time to start ignoring FIFA and having a different tournament that means more. Bureaucrats and marketers are simply impossible to like.

And one last gripe… please stop people saying "The Reds"! No one in Canada calls them that. According to statscan 75% o...
