Xi Jinping calls for 'building a strong military in the new era' amid Taiwan issues, border tensions with India

Amid rising tensions with the United States over Taiwan issues and border clashes with neighboring India, Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered a "comprehensive upgrade " of the Chinese armed forces.

What happened: Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, called for "building a strong military into the new era,” according to state-owned media CGTN.

The Chinese president's comments came days before the 95th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Xi highlighted continuous efforts to strengthen the training of Chinese military personnel to enhance their sense of responsibility, mission and urgency.

"[We] have to make sure that the weapons are always in the hands of someone who is loyal to the Party," he said.

The president also called for high-tech modernization for all military talents, advancing their ability to recognize, innovate and implement.
