Simplot Australia will invest $65 million to upgrade its manufacturing site in Bathurst and a further $40 million to acquire farmland in the region.

Dane Smith, executive director of supply chain at Simplot, said the investment is aimed at transforming the manufacturing facility into a center of excellence for frozen vegetables .

"This will allow us to increase production capacity and ultimately increase local and export volumes," Smith said.

He said growing demand for frozen vegetables over the past two years and pandemic-induced supply chain issues have contributed to supply issues.

He said the expansion needed to address those concerns after his company was forced to source produce from farms as far away as Bundaberg.

"It was really about creating a more localized and resilient supply chain, securing local access to crops closer to our facility," he said.

Boosting the economy

The expansion is expected to create 100 jobs during the construction phase, which is expected to be completed in 2024.

Bathurst Mayor Robert Taylor, said it was a major boost for the Midwest.

"What a tremendous boost for the region, for Bathurst and for the economy," said Mr. Taylor.

"The construction work will come from here, I hope most of the materials will be purchased through the city, which will create jobs."

Mr. Smith said the announcement also secured existing roles for 200 employees at the facility.
