£110billion needed to cover rising energy bill next year, study finds

The government is expected to spend more than £110 billion to cover almost all of Britons' additional energy costs over the next year, according to a new report from the Institute for Government (IfG).

It would cost £23bn to cover October's energy price cap hike, think tank says - the average household is set to spend £900 more on energy this autumn than planned just three months ago.

Extending support to ease the pain of soaring bills next year would cost an additional £90bn, the IfG said, suggesting the prospect of "substantial" spending during the cost of living crisis.
