1923 Interview: Helen Mirren on the "Herd Comes First" Mentality

The first episode of the prequel to Yellowstone, 1923, makes one thing clear: the herd comes first. The family mantra is spoken repeatedly by Helen Mirren's Cara Dutton as she explains what Michelle Randolph's Elizabeth is getting herself into by marrying into the family.

While speaking to ComingSoon about the show, the acclaimed actress opened up about the challenges of that mentality and how Cara deals with family.

"I am not a farmer's daughter and have never worked on a farm, but I know that when you work on any type of farm, you are a slave to the environment, the weather, whether it's raining or not, or if there's too much sun," Mirren explained. "So you can't just put those things aside and say, 'Well, I think I'm going to vacation for a few weeks", because it is a constant request. So at that level, I certainly understand what Cara is saying, and I think it's a great way of telling this young woman who is about to enter the family, what the priorities of the family."
