1923's Brian Geraghty on Harrison Ford on the Set of the Yellowstone Prequel [Exclusive Interview]

We haven't met your character that long in this first episode. So what can you tell us about him?

So Zane is the foreman of the Dutton ranch. And he works with Jacob and does whatever Jacob really needs, and sometimes even unrelated to the ranch. He will take care of him. But his work is a bit like Robert Duvall in "The Godfather". You know what I mean? He's behind...trying to make sure everything goes well.

He is described in some places as "extremely loyal", but he is not really part of the family. So is there any backstory there or anything you could tell us about?

Yes, I think so. I don't think we're touching it yet this season, but I feel like we can. But I think you will see. Yeah. I think Jacob really helped him, and I think he has loyalty beyond his title.

Is this a story you have for yourself, or did you get any hints from [series creator] Taylor [Sheridan]?

Yeah, that's something I made up myself. I thought, "That's my job. Let me figure that out." And the higher the stakes for me, the more it would be... "loyal" is a very general word. How is he loyal? And I was like, 'Well, if we're doing a TV show about this, it's got to be the nth degree of loyalty. Or what's the point of even playing the part, right?' So yeah, I did it myself, and maybe I'll share it with Taylor. But I wouldn't even want to do that. I'd rather he just write his big words and then be like, "Oh, that's it." Because you go through the front door, you go through the back door, it's going to tell the same story. Either way, I'm loyal. Right?

It's true. And he's obviously very grounded in that world. So was there any guidance, information you got from him that was really helpful?

Well, he organized a two-week cowboy camp for us. And so we all rode and learned and we were sore and we felt terrible, and then we got good. Yeah. So it was pretty much repetitive – just time in the saddle, time around the ranch, time in my boots, my leggings, really getting used to wearing my spurs, kicking the horse with them. We had two weeks. We didn't start touring with horses for about six weeks, and that's when I felt like I was in a [good] place. Sure, I've ridden a horse before, but when you work with Taylor, it's the bar, because he's a real cowboy.
