Texas and Florida again tops the list of US states which most people are moving to, according to a U-Haul analysis.
The moving company, which examined more than 2.5 million one-way transactions in the United States and Canada for its 2025 “growth index,” says Texas ranks first among immigration states, followed by Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina. The states where the most people are leaving are California, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts.
“The migration from blue to red, a highly controversial political topic that became more pronounced after the 2020 pandemic, continues to be a noticeable trend,” U-Haul said. “Seven of the ten fastest-growing states currently have Republican governors, and nine of those states went red in the last presidential election.”
“Conversely, nine of the ten states with the lowest growth have Democratic governors, and seven of these states went blue in the last presidential election,” he adds.

U-Haul also said that sunshine and warm weather appear to be a motivating factor for movers, as eight of Top 10 Immigration States are based in the south.

It moves up one spot from its previous ranking behind South Carolina, which drops four spots after being the top growth state for 2024,” according to U-Haul. “The top 10 also includes Washington, Arizona, Idaho, Alabama and Georgia.”

U-Haul said it ranked states “based on their net gain (or loss) from customers who rented a one-way truck, trailer or U-Box container in one state and dropped off their equipment in another state.”
“Although the rankings are not directly linked to population or economic growth, the U-Haul Growth Index is an effective indicator of how states, metros and cities attract and retain residents,” the company continued.
It also says Oregon, which ranked 11th in 2025 among net gain states, saw the biggest increase in its position, improving 23 spots from 2024. Meanwhile, Ohio saw the biggest drop, going from 14th last year to 43rd this year.

“Although the exodus of DIY movers in California was greater than in any other state, the net loss in 2025 was less than in 2024,” U-Haul said.
