Be honest: Netflix’s top 10 probably decides a lot of what you want to stream for you. It’s a universal seal of approval that any trend might be worth it…and who wants to get confused when it comes to finding something to watch?
Since last week, a relatively unknown song has dominated the charts, and according to fans, it’s for good reason. As one X/Twitter user says: “This is one of the best spy shows out there, every episode is captivating.”
Why you need to stream Netflix’s surprise hit, Unfamiliar, this week

Look on it
Read the full Netflix synopsis for Unknown and tell me this doesn’t sound like an absolute must-have:
“Meret and Simon Schäfer’s quiet night at home to celebrate their daughter Nina’s (Maja Bons) 16th birthday hits a problem when they receive a call from a man claiming he has been injured and needs their help. It’s not an unusual request: the couple runs a safehouse in Berlin and, as former agents of the German Secret Service (BND), they have handled their share of emergencies.
“But Simon and Meret are suspicious, and they have reason to be: this man’s wounds are self-inflicted, he behaves erratically, and they can’t figure out who he is.”
I am immediately hooked. Any show where you’re introduced to a stranger you can’t trust means the stakes will be incredibly high, with some impressive twists and turns along the way. The fact that we’re introduced to the guy so early means we’re only scratching the surface of what’s to come…and I love a well-crafted story arc.
“The person who sent the man to them? Josef Koleev (Samuel Finzi), a high-ranking Russian military intelligence (GRU) officer suspected of espionage and recently arrived in Berlin. At the shelter, Simon and Meret know they have a problem when the man who does not want to identify himself alludes to a disastrous mission 16 years ago in Belarus, in which the evil Koleev was involved.
“This mission set them on their current path and has defined their family’s lives ever since, whether they all realize it or not. As new details emerge, Nina realizes how many skeletons are in her parents’ closet, and Meret uncovers Simon’s greatest betrayal. Can the couple grapple with their past to save their family’s future? Or will their secrets be their undoing?
Scandal? A girl kept in the dark who now pays the price? A family on the verge of ruin? Unknown is the spy series that keeps on giving, and that’s just from reading the preview.
One of the biggest comments from fans is how the series maintains its tension from start to finish. Don’t expect a murderous first before things wind down, because Unknown is here for the long haul.
If nothing else, think The Americans encounter Safe house…so good luck keeping your heart rate stable.
