Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but the “vinyl revival” shows no signs of slowing down. Continued interest in the retro music format has sparked an influx of new turntables from various brands – some of which you’ll find in our guide to the best turntables – as big bands and artists release their albums on vinyl, with exclusive colored versions now becoming commonplace.
Alongside my role as a home entertainment expert for TechRadar Australia, I am also the Editor-in-Chief of Australian Hi-Fi magazine, which means I live and breathe hi-fi and all things audio. Naturally, my home hi-fi system includes a turntable, and the JBL Spinner BT is what currently sits atop my hi-fi rack – and with its price currently reduced by 42% on Amazon, I can easily recommend you consider putting it on yours too.
I bought JBL’s fun and funky deck for several reasons. Call me vain but I was immediately attracted to her look. The vast majority of (affordable) turntables are basic black stands with the record platter on top. With the Spinner BT, JBL has injected color and it is available in black and orange or black and gold. Orange is my favorite color, so no prizes for guessing which version I have at home.
Secondly, even at its usual RRP of AU$649.95, it can comfortably be described as affordable. And now it has a huge discount on Amazon, it can be purchased for AU$379 – that’s over AU$270 off. Note, however, that this is a Prime-exclusive price. If you don’t have a Prime account (you can sign up for a 30-day free trial), it’s still affordable at AU$399.
And then, of course, there’s what it gives. Once you get it set up – it’s a simple process with a detailed, easy-to-follow set of instructions – it delivers performance that exceeds what you might expect for the price. This is a surprisingly revealing turntable, capable of extracting great detail from a record’s grooves.
To get the sound from the JBL turntable, you have several options. The easiest is to stream wirelessly to a Bluetooth speaker or pair of headphones. The “BT” in the turntable’s name indicates its Bluetooth credentials. But it’s also perfectly at home connected directly to an amplifier and a pair of passive speakers: it has a built-in phono preamplifier, which means you can connect it to virtually any amp you want (unlike a model with a dedicated phono input).
So it’s a consummate performer and will easily outperform those cheap and cheerful briefcase-style turntables you see at big electronics retailers. If you want to jump on the vinyl revival bandwagon, then trust me – this JBL turntable is one of the best (and wallet-friendly) purchases you can make to get up and running.
