What is espresso lemonade? Just two real ingredients, espresso and lemonade, plus ice and a little lemon zest for flavoring. Espresso Lemonade is a cold coffee drink made by pouring a shot of espresso over sweet lemonade and ice. The espresso briefly floats in a dark layer on the pale lemonade before being stirred, which is a big part of why it films so well.

French troops garrisoned at a fortress called Mazagran, near the coastal town of Mostaganem, needed coffee so they could drink in the North African heat. They cut it with cold water, sometimes sweetened it with coffee syrup, and sometimes added brandy or rum to stay alert during nighttime patrols. The fortress gave its name to the drink. The name carries weight: Mazagran was the scene of a battle during the French invasion of Algeria, a colonial occupation that only ended in 1962.
Mazagran was called the original iced coffee. It predates most of what we would call the category.
Where it survived: ordering a mazagran in France was still common in the 20th century and has largely disappeared there. The strongest surviving tradition is that Portugalwhere mazagran evolved into something very close to what TikTok currently drinks, espresso on ice with lemon, sometimes lemonade, often a measure of rum, sometimes mint. In Austria it is served with an ice cube and rum or maraschino, drunk all at once. In Catalonialemon iced coffee is standard.
So when a TikTok commenter points out that it’s just mazagran, he’s right. The Detroit customer independently arrived at a drink that has been on Portuguese cafe menus for more than a century.
Why Espresso and Lemonade Actually Work Together Most coverage stops at “surprisingly, it works.” Here is the mechanism.
Acid shortens bitterness. The bitterness of coffee comes largely from compounds developed during roasting. Six variations worth doing 1. The Portuguese Mazagran (the original). Espresso over ice, a generous squeeze of fresh lemon, simple syrup to taste, a sprig of mint and 0.5 oz of aged rum. This is the drink as it’s currently served in Lisbon and it’s better than the TikTok version.
2. Espresso lemonade spritz. Cut the lemonade into 4 ounces and top with 4 ounces of sparkling water or club soda. Lighter, longer and the carbonation carries the aroma.
3. Rosemary espresso lemonade. Place a sprig of rosemary between your palms to release the oils and drop it in. The resinous note against the coffee and citrus is surprisingly excellent.
4. Espresso Lemonade Tonic. Replace sparkling water with tonic. Quinine adds its own bitterness that pairs well with a light, fruity roast. Build with mint, then tonic, then lemonade, then espresso, pouring each slowly.

Honest answers to the questions people really ask Does espresso make emonade curd?
No, this is the most common concern and is unfounded, curdling requires dairy protein, and there is none in this drink. If you want to add milk or a little cream, this is where the acid becomes a problem, the lemon juice will cause the milk to curdle on contact. Add oat milk or dairy products to lemonade at your own risk.

Is it bad for acid reflux?
For people with GERD or reflux, this drink works against you. Coffee and citrus fruits are both common triggers, and both can relax the lower esophageal sphincter. Adding gasification makes the situation worse by increasing gastric pressure. A single 1-ounce shot of espresso contains approximately 63 mg of caffeine according to USDA benchmark data, so the 1.5-ounce shot used here is around 90 to 95 mg. If you instead take a full 2-ounce double dose, expect a dose closer to 120 to 150 mg. Either way, that’s less than a 12-ounce drip coffee (about 140 mg) and much less than a large cold brew (about 205 mg). Can I make it decaffeinated?
Yes, and it works well. The flavor mechanism here is the bitterness of the roast versus the acid, which decaffeinated espresso still has. Good option for the evening.
Is it healthier than an iced latte?
Different, not clearly better. It’s dairy-free and lighter on the palate, but a standard 6-ounce serving of commercial lemonade contains about 75 to 100 calories and 20 to 30 grams of sugar, comparable to or higher than a sweet latte. The espresso itself adds almost nothing, just a few calories. To reduce sugar, make lemonade with half the usual sugar or use fresh lemon juice, water and a small amount of honey, espresso will make it sweeter than it actually is.
Hot or cold espresso?
Cold or room temperature, always. Hot espresso melts your ice, and dilution is the biggest factor in this drink’s failure.
Can I use regular coffee instead?
Only if he’s strong. Standard drip is too weak. Cold brew concentrate is the best substitute and is more forgiving than espresso.
Can I get there in advance?
