Director Mike White shares details of the unexpected origin of the Emmy-winning HBO series “The White Lotus.” The designer shared his vacation with the actress Jennifer Coolidge helped spark the idea for the hit series, crafting its satirical tone against the backdrop of a luxury resort.

Mike White went on safari with Jennifer Coolidge
During an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” White briefly spoke about the two-week trip he took with Coolidge that led to the creation of “The White Lotus.” The two were longtime friends and they went on a safari in 2018.
White said it was an “awesome” and “fun” experience, but he also noted how Coolidge was a little paranoid during the trip. “So we’d go out and she’d say, ‘Wow, look at those packs of lions!’ And then she said: “Do you see how they look at us? I know that look! We have to get out of here! I’m not kidding,” White said, imitating Coolidge’s voice.
Despite Coolidge’s paranoid tendencies, the director said he was “happy” to have had this experience with the actress.

In 2025, Coolidge talked about this safari vacation with SHEremembering how sick she felt because of the hot weather. Additionally, she opened up about her paranoia, sharing that she had to “look in the tent for five hours to check for snakes.” “I couldn’t handle anything,” the actress added.
Coolidge jokes that she was lucky that White continued to talk to her after the trip, despite her fears and vomiting. As she said, it was this experience with White that landed her the role of Tanya McQuoid in “The White Lotus.”
Tanya McQuoid, a rich and dramatic heiress, was present in the first two seasons of the series. Coolidge shared that one of the best parts of the role was hearing people tell him, “These gays, these gays are trying to murder me,” one of his famous lines from the series.

Mike White hates turning down actors
“The White Lotus” takes place in different locations each season, and the majority of the cast changes as well. As White shared, many actors want to be on the show, but he hasn’t been able to accommodate everyone.
“The problem is, when you have a show that people want to be on, which I obviously feel grateful for, you feel like you’re rejecting everyone in town,” White said. He added that he just wanted to cast the right actors for each role.
Some actors who have appeared in the series include Aubrey Plaza, Walton Goggins, Parker Posey, Alexandra Daddario, Sydney Sweeney and Theo James, among others.

Mike White joined ‘Survivor’ while on hiatus from ‘The White Lotus’
White joined season 37 of “Survivor” in 2018, where he finished second. The reality series is currently in its 50th season and White decided to join the landmark series, which features a returning cast.
As The explosion previously reported, White was eager to play “Survivor” again and even offered to adjust the schedule of “The White Lotus.” Luckily, he didn’t need to, because the schedules lined up perfectly. “I love my show, obviously, and I can’t wait to get back to it, but it’s nice to think about something else, to do something different, to get out of my head, out of my little world,” White explained. In season 4 of “The White Lotus”
The first three seasons of “The White Lotus” took place in Hawaii, Italy and Thailand, respectively. According to White, they will travel to France to film season 4, hinting, “We’ll party in Paris, but it doesn’t have to be Paris.”
When it comes to destinations, White said he picks places he thinks would be fun to film in. “You have these beautiful hotels, and they give me a really nice room. And then in the room, there’s a White Lotus cake to eat and champagne,” he shared.
