Fans compare the event to notorious disasters at conferences like Glasgow Willy Wonka Experience, DashConand Fyre Fest.
Mattel promoted the event as “the first festival dedicated to all things Barbie” that would “explore the heritage, evolution and boundless imagination of the Barbie brand”, promising a “Interactive Walk-In Dreamhouse», an 80s disco skating rink, a market and a bike course, among other benefits. cardboard cutout of the facade of a generic pink house with a sad little patch of grass for “lawn” on a vast bare concrete floor, a “20×20 pen”of a roller disco surrounded by metal concert barricades covered in depressingly effortless banners (again, on a bare concrete floor), random vendors, including one”of a door and window company”, and a biking course divided with cones apparently left behind at a local elementary school’s gym class and unbranded pink banners.

I was skeptical for a few months as to why there hadn’t been any official photos of what the scam would look like. In all the Barbie Dream Fest commercials they looked like this and since it’s Mattel (billion dollar company) I thought they would be successful. A person who paid for the cheapest VIP package wrote on Reddit”$250 with no extra benefits and all we received for the included products was spray hand sanitizer.” According to another participant”The coveted ‘swag bag’ for people who paid over $400 was a plastic brush and hand sanitizer, no bag, no exclusive products.” It’s also worth noting that Mischief Management, the company that partnered with Mattel to put on Barbie Dream Fest, has a checkered history with other disappointing conventions it’s done in the past, including Romance Con.
The one positive that fans have consistently brought up are the special guests and speakers, who seem to be trying to make the best of a bad situation. Even Serena Williams actually showed up to receive the “Icon Award”, whatever it may be. But it’s small comfort for anyone who traveled and spent money to attend the Barbie Dream Fest, the reality of which turned out to be as far removed from its marketing as Fort Lauderdale is from Malibu.
