Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Lobo #2
Jason Momoa officially takes on the role of Wolf for the new DCU, and the anticipation is quite high for its upcoming debut in Supergirlreleased in just a few months. However, DC Comics just did something very exciting with The Main Man, seemingly in honor of Momoa’s brand new DC role, by giving Lobo a surprising new rival hero in his latest appearance.
While Momoa is set to make his DCU debut as intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in Supergirlthe actor originally played Aquaman in the previous cinematic universe before it was rebooted by new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. Momoa has made several appearances as Aquamanfirst appeared in 2016 Batman v Superman: The dawn of justice and the 2017s Justice League before playing in two Aquaman films (and several cameo appearances). However, Momoa now has the chance to play Lobo, the DC role that many believe he was born to play.
That said, rather than completely ignoring Jason Momoa’s past role as Aquaman in the previous DCEU, the comics are instead having fun with the exciting change, resulting in a very meta and very entertaining match between Lobo and Aquaman himself in the new one. Wolf #2 by Skottie Young and Jorge Corona.
2 months before Supergirl, Lobo faces Aquaman before his DCU debut
In a perfectly timed synergy, DC Comics pitted Lobo against Aquaman just months before his big screen debut in the DCU.
In the new Wolf #2the titular intergalactic bounty hunter continues to work for Omni Omega+ Entertainment Corp., starring in his own galaxy-wide reality show called “The Main Man”, where Lobo’s various jobs are broadcast as anti-hero entertainment. However, the focus group data resulted in Lobo receiving a new costume and look, as well as deciding that Lobo needed to fight a legitimate hero to increase ratings.
As a result, Lobo receives a contract to hire none other than Emperor Aquamancurrently traveling the cosmos and building his new intergalactic empire.
Although Aquaman rightly mocks Lobo’s ridiculous new look, the major brawl between the two powerhouses ends after an hour-long standoff, only concluding when Lobo’s contract is abruptly canceled. Apparently, OOEC has just been acquired by Galactic Rodent Productions (arguably the DC cosmic version of Disney).
Will Lobo one day fight Aquaman in James Gunn’s DC Universe?
As funny as this brawl between Lobo and Aquaman is, the big question now is whether this showdown could ever happen on the big screen. In good timing, Jason Momoa literally joked with Peter Safran about wanting to do a The Lobo/Aquaman project on stage at CinemaCon the day before Wolf #2 released from DC Comics.
Could a showdown between Lobo and Arthur Curry happen one day in the new DCU? It’s certainly possible. That said, it seems unlikely that Momoa will still play Aquaman now that he’s attached to Lobo.

Are you the Man of Steel or are you still stuck in a phone booth?
It’s more than likely that the King of Atlantis will ultimately be recast for future appearances in the new DC Universe. Although some actors/roles are retained across universes, such as John Cena as Peacemaker and/or Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, the most important roles have been or will be recast, such as David Corenswet now plays Superman instead of Henry Cavill.
Either way, a live-action showdown between Lobo and Aquaman has a lot of potential. After all, this new Lobo issue just proved it. Although nothing has been officially confirmed yet, Wolf #2 serves as a fun preview of what could be for The Main Man and King of Atlantis in the DCU.
