Three people were killed overnight in a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region, Russian officials said.
A woman died in a house in Khimki, north of the capital, where one person was trapped under the rubble, regional governor Andrei Vorobiev said. A man and a woman were killed in the village of Pogorelki.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 12 people were injured in attacks on an oil refinery in the city. The Russian military said 556 drones had been intercepted.
In Ukraine, eight people were injured in Russian drone attacks and shelling in the central Dnipropetrovsk region, officials said.
In a post on Telegram early Sunday, Vorobiev wrote that “since three o’clock in the morning, air defense forces have repelled a large-scale drone.” [drone] attack on the capital region.
He said four people – three men and a woman – were injured in the area and a number of houses were damaged.
A private house caught fire in the village of Subbotino, southwest of Moscow, the governor added.
Moscow Mayor Sobyanin said 12 people were injured when drones struck the entrance to the city’s oil refinery. Three neighboring houses were damaged.
Meanwhile, Sheremetyevo – Russia’s busiest airport serving Moscow – reported a drone crash on its territory. No one was hurt.
“The situation at passenger terminals is calm. Sheremetyevo Airport provides stable services to passengers and aircraft,” airport authorities said.
Ukraine has not publicly commented on the latest drone strikes in the Moscow region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed to retaliate for Russia’s deadly attack on kyiv and other Ukrainian regions.
He said on Saturday that this week Ukraine had already destroyed high-value Russian military equipment, including a plane, a helicopter and a cargo ship.
“Our long-range sanctions have also hit Russian oil installations and ships,” Zelensky said, referring to Ukrainian drone attacks deep inside Russia, adding that “most operations are still ongoing.”
In recent months, the Ukrainian military has intensified its strikes against key energy facilities in Russia.
kyiv says these are legitimate targets because they allow Russia to continue its war effort.

Also overnight, Russia carried out more than 30 drone attacks and bombings against four districts in the Dnipropetrovsk region, senior local official Oleksandr Hanzha said.
He said eight people were injured and a number of houses were damaged or destroyed.
Three people were injured in Dnipro, the regional capital, and several fires were reported in the city.
A woman was injured in a Russian drone attack in the Zaporizhzhia region of southern Ukraine on Saturday evening, local officials said.
In its latest update, the Ukrainian Air Force said Russia had launched 287 drones since Saturday evening.
It said 279 drones were shot down or intercepted, but there were eight direct hits in seven locations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and Moscow currently controls about 20% of Ukraine’s territory.
