It was Memorial Day weekend and I was doing everything right.

Sunscreen applied before getting dressed. Hat. The whole routine of responsible adults. I was wearing a white linen shirt over my swimsuit, I grabbed the bottle to reapply it to my arms, and a long white streak of mineral sunscreen was transferred directly to the front of the shirt before I even realized what had happened.

My instinct was the same as I always have: wet cloth, cold water, erase. The white streak becomes lighter. I thought I had succeeded. I threw the shirt in the wash that night with everything else.

The next morning I took it out of the machine and found an orange stain that I never put in there.

I stood in the laundry room, genuinely confused, for about thirty seconds before starting my search. What I found explained both the white streak and the orange spot, and also explained why treating them the same way was exactly the wrong approach. The type of sunscreen you wear determines the type of stain you face. And the orange stain that appears after washing is one of the most chemically interesting laundry problems that most people will encounter.

Here’s everything I learned.

The Short Answer: How to Remove Sunscreen from Clothes

Treatment depends on the type of sunscreen. For chemical sunscreens (avobenzone-based): treat the greasy stain before washing. Use dish soap or absorbent powder to dry first, then rinse cold. Pretreatment is essential because avobenzone reacts with iron in the water during the wash cycle to create orange rust stains that were not there before. For mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide): brush off dry residue first, then dish soap and wash on hot. Never use bleach on a sunscreen stain. It permanently fixes both oil and orange rust discoloration. Check before tumble drying. Heat sets sunscreen stains permanently.

Why sunscreen stains are different from other stains Most food and fabric stains are passive. They sit on the fabric and wait for you to take care of them. Sunscreen stains are more complicated for two reasons.

First, sunscreen is designed to be water resistant. That’s the goal. Water- and sweat-resistant formulas are designed to stay on your skin during swimming and activity. These same properties make sunscreen adhere to fabric fibers in a way that most food stains do not. The oils in sunscreen won’t wash off like tomato sauce or coffee will. They need a surfactant to break the bond.

Second, chemical sunscreens containing avobenzone create a stain that only fully appears after the clothing is washed. Avobenzone is a UV filter that reacts with iron particles found in tap water, especially in areas with hard water, to produce rust-colored orange compounds during the wash cycle. According to CBS News, which widely reported on it in 2024Tide confirmed that avobenzone “can react with iron in hard water, leaving rust-colored stains” on clothing. The orange stain you find after washing wasn’t there when you took the shirt off. It was formed in the machine. Understanding this is the key to treating it correctly.

The golden rule: know what sunscreen you are wearing Before treating a sunscreen stain, identify the formula. This determines how many types of stains you face and which products to use.

Prevention advice to know: Allow the sunscreen to fully absorb into your skin for at least 15 minutes before getting dressed. Most sunscreen transfer to fabric occurs when the formula is still wet on the skin. These 15 minutes significantly reduce the amount of sunscreen that reaches your clothes. This is particularly relevant for mineral sunscreens, which sit on the surface of the skin rather than being absorbed into it.

Chemical sunscreen (avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate): These absorb UV rays as they penetrate the skin. They are oil-based and leave a greasy residue on the fabric. If your sunscreen specifically contains avobenzone, you’re also dealing with a potential orange rust stain after washing. Two problems: oil stain and rust stain. Two processing steps.

Mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide): These sit on the skin and physically block UV rays. They leave a white or yellowish chalky residue on the fabric from the mineral particles, as well as a layer of oil from the formula base. They do not contain avobenzone and do not cause an orange rust reaction. One problem: oil and mineral residue. Easier to fix than a chemical sunscreen with an avobenzone component.

Tinted sunscreen: An additional layer of pigment on top of the oily base. Treat the pigment the same way as foundation stains once the oil layer has been treated.

Solar spray: Same chemistry as the basic formula (chemical or mineral) but tends to deposit more product on the fabric because its application is more difficult to control. Same treatment protocol, often requiring longer powder absorption time due to greater oil deposition.

The Orange Spot Problem: What’s Really Happening

This deserves its own section because it’s the most misunderstood part of removing sunscreen stains and the one that causes the most frustration.

When you wear chemical sunscreen containing avobenzone and then wash the clothing, avobenzone residue in the fabric comes into contact with iron minerals in tap water. A chemical reaction occurs during the wash cycle that converts avobenzone into an orange or rust-colored compound that binds to the fabric fiber. As one textile chemistry source explains, “that orange mark is actually rust,” formed by avobenzone “reacting with the iron in your water.” The stain appears after washing, not before, which is why so many people don’t know where it comes from.

This reaction is made worse by heat, hard water, and allowing sunscreen residue to remain in the fabric before pre-treatment. The key prevention step is to remove as much avobenzone as possible from the fabric before the garment is exposed to water. Pretreating with dish soap or enzyme remover before washing reduces the amount of avobenzone available to react with iron and greatly reduces the likelihood of orange stains forming.

If the orange stain has already appeared after washing, it requires a completely different treatment than the original oil stain. It is now a rust stain and should be treated with a rust remover containing oxalic acid, such as Bar Keepers Friend or Whink Rust Stain Remover. Dish soap and detergent will not remove it. OxiClean will not remove it. Bleach will make it permanent.

4 methods that actually work (tested results) 1

Dish soap applied dry (all types of sunscreen, step one) This is the first thing to do for every sunscreen stain, regardless of the formula type. Before the water touches the fabric, the oil layer must be removed.

For mineral sunscreen with visible white residue, first brush or shake off as much dry mineral particle residue as possible. A soft brush or dry cloth works. Don’t rub it.

Then apply liquid dish soap directly to the stain without adding water. Work it gently with your fingertip, from the outside of the stain inwards. Let sit for 10 to 15 minutes. The surfactants in dish soap break the bond between the oil base of the sunscreen and the fiber of the fabric. This is the same approach used for grease stains And oil-based salad dressings because the chemistry is identical: fat is hydrophobic, water does not displace it, surfactant does.

Rinse with cold water on the back of the fabric once the dish soap has had time to work. This pushes the stain away rather than penetrating it deeper into the fabric.

For chemical sunscreens: this pre-treatment step before washing is essential to prevent orange rust stain. The more oil and avobenzone you remove before the garment hits the wash water, the less reaction occurs in the machine.

Fresh sunscreen stains treated with dish soap before washing: 70-80% lifting of the oily component. Combined with correct washing temperature and enzymatic detergent: 85-90% total lift on the lubricating element.

Verdict: Non-negotiable first step for every sunscreen stain. Do it before the machine, every time.

2

Absorbent powder (heavy oil deposits, before dish soap) For highly saturated sunscreen stains, especially those from a sunscreen spray or heavy application, absorbent powder before dish soap extracts more oil than dish soap alone can handle. Apply cornstarch or baking soda directly to the dry stain, leave for 30 to 60 minutes, then brush before applying dish soap.

This is the same protocol used for butter stains and works for the same reason: the porous powder particles bind to the oil molecules through adsorption and extract them from the fiber before any liquid processing begins. If there is a lot of sunscreen buildup, skipping this step and going straight to dish soap leaves more oil for the dish soap to process, reducing its effectiveness.

After brushing off the powder, apply dry dish soap and proceed to Method 1. The two steps combined deal with much heavier oil deposits than either step alone.

On stubborn sunscreen stains with powder pretreatment followed by dish soap: 85-90% rise with oil before washing.

Verdict: Add it before dish soap for heavily applied stains or spray on sunscreen.

3

Oxalic Acid Rust Remover (Avobenzone Orange Stains Only) If the orange stain has already appeared after washing, dish soap and detergent will not remove it. This is now a rust stain caused by oxidized iron compounds and requires a rust remover formulated with oxalic acid. Friend of bartenders (powder or liquid), Whink Rust Stain Removerand similar oxalic acid products dissolve the iron-avobenzone compound through a reduction reaction. When the oxalic acid comes into contact with the rust compound, you may see the orange color begin to disappear almost immediately.

Apply rust remover to the orange stain according to the product instructions. Test on a hidden seam first. Work it in gently with a soft brush. Leave for the recommended exposure time, then rinse thoroughly with cold water.

Once the rust is treated, the oil layer from the original sunscreen stain may still be present underneath. Follow with dish soap, dry, rinse and wash. Lemon juice combined with salt is a gentler natural alternative for light orange stains: saturate the stain with lemon juice, sprinkle with salt, let sit in the sun for several hours, then rinse and wash.

Do not use bleach at any time. Bleach permanently sets rust stains and reacts with iron compounds to make the discoloration irreversible.

On avobenzone orange stains treated with oxalic acid rust remover: 80-90% lift in a single treatment. On stains that experienced additional wash cycles or heat after orange appeared: 50-65%.

Verdict: The only effective treatment for orange rust stains. Oxalic acid dissolves what no detergent can dissolve.

4

Enzymatic stain remover + oxygen bleach (stubborn residue) For stubborn sunscreen stains that survive the dish soap pretreatment, or for dried stains discovered after the fact, a enzyme-based stain remover applied before washing, it breaks down both oil and any protein residue from sweat combined with sunscreen. Apply it to the pretreated stain, let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes, then wash it in the hottest water the care label allows.

For any yellow discoloration remaining on white fabrics after oil treatment, oxygen bleach powder in a warm water bath for 1-4 hours is the correct follow-up. Oxygen bleach is safe for most colors and fabrics and works on yellowish mineral residue that may remain after treatment with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. It is not effective on avobenzone orange rust stain, which requires treatment with oxalic acid. t above.

On dried or stubborn sunscreen stains after enzyme treatment and bleach soaking: 75-85% additional elevator. Particularly effective on yellowish residues left by mineral sunscreens on white fabrics.

Verdict: Best aftercare for stubborn stains and yellow mineral residue on white fabrics.

Pro tip: The most effective thing you can do to prevent orange avobenzone stains is to pretreat before the garment hits the wash water. Keep a stain remover pen in your beach bag. Apply it to all sunscreen contact areas before storing, especially the collar, shoulders and sleeves, while the fabric is still dry. This removes the avobenzone before it has a chance to react with the iron in the wash. If you’re spending time outside this summer, whether at a pool party, a day at the beach, or a backyard barbecuepretreating your clothes before washing is the difference between a simple oil stain and an orange stain you didn’t expect.

Fabric matters: what works on what The rule of pretreatment before washing applies to all fabrics. What changes is the washing temperature and subsequent treatments that are safe.

White cotton and linen: Full protocol available. Powder if heavy, dry dish soap, cold rinse, enzyme remover if needed, hot wash. Eucerin’s sunscreen stain guide specifically warns that temperatures above 40°C (104°F) can intensify UV filter stains even after pretreatment by accelerating the reaction between filter compounds and metal ions in the water. Keep machine wash warm, not hot. Dip the oxygen bleach to remove any yellow residue. For orange rust stains, use an oxalic acid rust remover before washing.

Colorful cotton and linen: Same pretreatment. Wash warm. Avoid oxygen bleach on heavily colored fabrics unless tested first. Oxalic acid rust remover is generally color safe, but test it on a hidden seam. No bleach.

Swimwear and sportswear: Spandex and elastane fibers degrade with hot water and harsh chemicals. Dish soap in cold water, gentle treatment only, always air dry. Never put a swimsuit in a hot dryer. Enzyme remover is acceptable on most swimsuits, but check the care label. Oxygen bleach in cold water for 30 minutes is generally safe on most swimwear fabrics, but always test first.

Polyester and synthetics: Sunscreen oils do not penetrate as deeply as natural fibers. Dish soap and cold water pretreatment, enzyme remover, hot wash. Oxygen bleach generally safe.

Silk and wool: Extremely mild dish soap, cold water only, no soaking, no enzyme remover for prolonged contact (proteases degrade protein fibers), no oxygen bleach on wool, no hot water, no tumble dryer. Professional cleaning is the safest option for heavy sunscreen stains on either fabric.

Dark fabrics: White mineral sunscreen residue is particularly visible on dark colors. Brush off as much dry mineral residue as possible before any liquid treatment. Dish soap gently, cold rinse. Avoid oxygen bleach on dark fabrics. Orange avobenzone stain is also very visible on dark fabrics and requires treatment with oxalic acid.

Step-by-step emergency protocol

Step 1: Identify the type of sunscreen. Chemical (avobenzone in the list of ingredients) or mineral (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide). This determines whether you are at risk of an orange rust stain and to what extent you urgently need to pre-treat before washing.

Step 2: Remove solid residue. For mineral sunscreen with visible white residue, gently brush or shake off the dry mineral particles. Do not rub them on the fabric.

Step 3: Apply dry dish soap. No water yet. Dish soap directly on the stain, applied gently with your fingertip from the outside in. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. For heavy deposits, apply absorbent powder first, leave for 30-60 minutes, brush, then apply dish soap.

Step 4: Rinse cold from the back. Cold water on the back of the stain. This removes loose oil and dish soap without pushing anything deeper.

Step 5: Apply enzyme remover if necessary. For stubborn or dried-on stains, apply an enzymatic stain remover after rinsing with dish soap and leave for 15 minutes before washing.

Step 6: Wash at the correct temperature. All fabrics: warm as much as possible. Swimwear and synthetics: cold. Hot water can intensify UV filter stains even after pretreatment. Always check the care label.

Step 7: Check before tumble drying. If any oil residue or discoloration remains, repeat the pretreatment before drying. The dryer permanently fixes sunscreen stains.

Step 8: Treat Orange Stains Separately. If an orange stain appears after washing, treat it like a rust stain with an oxalic acid rust remover before the next wash cycle. Do not put back in the machine without treating first.

Never do these things with a stain of sunscreen

Never use bleach. Bleach permanently sets both the oil stain and the avobenzone orange rust stain. It reacts with iron compounds to make the discoloration irreversible. Bleach is prohibited for all sunscreen stains on all fabrics. Never put it in the dryer before the stain completely disappears. The heat permanently bonds the sunscreen oil to the fabric. Always check while still damp and allow to air dry if in doubt. Never wash without pre-treating first. For chemical sunscreens in particular, putting an untreated item of clothing in the machine exposes the avobenzone residue to the iron in the wash water and creates the orange rust stain. Pretreat with dish soap before machine, every time. Avoid hot water at all stages. Hot water on an untreated sunscreen stain sets the oil. But even after pretreatment, high machine wash temperatures can intensify UV filter stains by speeding up the reaction between filter compounds and metal ions in the water. Heat is the maximum for any clothing stained with sunscreen. Never treat orange rust stain with regular detergent or OxiClean. Neither will remove an avobenzone rust stain. It requires an oxalic acid rust remover. Using the wrong product wastes time while the stain becomes more difficult to remove. Avoid using fabric softener on sunscreen-stained loads. Fabric softeners coat the fibers of the fabric and can trap sunscreen residue, making the stain more difficult to remove when washing. Avoid fabric softener until the stain is completely gone. Which definitely doesn’t work Cold water rinse as first response. Rinsing a fresh sunscreen stain with water before treating with dish soap dilutes the surfactant you apply next and can spread the oil. The dish soap dries first, then the water.

Regular laundry detergent on an orange stain. The detergent is formulated for food stains, dirt and biological stains. It does not dissolve iron-based anti-rust compounds. If orange appears after washing, you need an oxalic acid product, not another cycle of detergent.

OxiClean on the orange stain. Bleach attacks organic pigment stains but does not work on rust. The iron-avobenzone compound is a metal-based dye requiring reduction chemistry, not oxidation. Using OxiClean on an orange avobenzone stain will produce little or no result.

Chlorine bleach on any sunscreen stain. Confirmed by several professional sources, including Tide and CNN. Highlighted: Bleach fixes rust stains with avobenzone permanently nente. Never use it.

Ignore areas of contact with sunscreen when washing. Collars, shoulders and sleeve edges regularly absorb avobenzone during the summer, even without visible stains. Pretreating these areas before washing, even if you don’t see a stain, prevents the orange rust reaction from building up over multiple wash cycles.

The only thing I wish I knew sooner Pretreat before washing. Not after. Before.

I always saw stain removal as a response to something I could see. The sunscreen stain seemed faint or invisible on the collar, so I threw the shirt in the wash. Orange appeared later. I treated the orange. Sometimes it came out, sometimes it didn’t. I was always behind in chemistry.

Once I understood that avobenzone reacted with iron during the wash cycle, not before, the whole process reversed itself. The time to intervene is before the garment hits the water. A few minutes of dish soap on the collar before each summer laundry almost completely eliminates the orange stain problem, because there is no avobenzone left to react. It is not a treatment. It’s a prevention that takes thirty seconds.

Final Thoughts The orange stain on the white linen shirt came out. It took Bar Keepers Friend, a soft brush and more patience than expected, but it came out. I now check the ingredient list of every sunscreen I buy, pretreat before every summer wash, and keep a stain remover pen in the beach bag.

Sunscreen stains are actually more chemically interesting than most people think. The oil layer, the mineral residue, the rust reaction to avobenzone: each requires a different tool and a different approach. Treating them all as one type of stain is why so many summer white and dark fabrics end up looking worse after washing than before. Knowing what sunscreen you’re wearing and what stain you’re actually dealing with is the whole game.

And still wear sunscreen. The stains are soluble. Sunburn is not.

If you’re managing stains beyond clothing this summer, the same pretreatment principles apply to upholstery and outdoor fabrics. For broader natural cleaning approaches around the home, the natural cleaning guide covers surfaces beyond the laundry room.

Frequently Asked Questions Why does sunscreen leave orange stains on clothes?

The orange stain comes from avobenzone, a UV filter found in most chemical sunscreens. Avobenzone reacts with iron minerals in tap water during the wash cycle to form rust-colored compounds that bind to fabric. The stain appears after washing, not before, which is why it’s so confusing. This is actually a rust stain caused by a chemical reaction in the washing machine. Pretreating with dish soap before washing removes enough avobenzone to significantly reduce the reaction. If the orange stain has already appeared, treat it with an oxalic acid rust remover, not a detergent.

Does sunscreen permanently stain clothes?

Not if it is processed correctly before heat setting. Sunscreen oil stains become very difficult to remove after running in a hot dryer. Avobenzone orange rust stains become much more difficult to remove after additional wash cycles and exposure to heat. Both types can be treated if captured before drying and treated with the appropriate product. Orange rust stain specifically requires an oxalic acid rust remover, not standard stain treatments.

How to remove mineral sunscreen from clothes?

Mineral sunscreen leaves residue of white or yellowish mineral particles as well as a layer of oil. Brush off as much dry mineral residue as possible before any liquid treatment. Apply dish soap directly to dry stain, work gently, let sit 10-15 minutes, rinse cold from behind. Wash with lukewarm water. For any yellow residue remaining on whites, oxygen bleach powder soaked for 1-4 hours will resolve it. Mineral sunscreen does not contain avobenzone and will not cause an orange rust stain.

How do you get sunscreen out of a black shirt?

White mineral sunscreen residue is particularly visible on black and dark fabrics. Brush off visible white residue first, then gently apply dish soap without rubbing. Rinse cold from the back. Avoid oxygen bleach on dark colors. For chemical sunscreen on dark fabrics, pretreat with dish soap before washing to prevent orange rust stains from forming. If orange appears after washing, apply an oxalic acid rust remover to the affected area before the next wash cycle.

How to remove sunscreen from a swimsuit?

Swimsuits contain elastane and spandex which degrade with heat and harsh chemicals. Apply dish soap to stain in cold water, work gently, rinse with cold water. Never use hot water on swimsuits. Never put a swimsuit in a hot dryer. Always air dry. For stubborn stains, a brief soak in cold water with a small amount of enzyme stain remover is generally safe on most swimwear fabrics, but check the care label and test first. Avoid oxygen bleach on brightly colored swimsuits.

What removes the orange stain left by sunscreen?

An oxalic acid rust remover is the right product. Bar Keepers Friend (powder or liquid), Whink Rust Stain Remover, and similar products dissolve the iron-avobenzone compound. Apply directly to the orange stain, leave to work, rinse thoroughly, then treat any remaining layer of oil with dish soap before washing. Lemon juice and salt are a gentler natural option for light orange stains: apply lemon juice, sprinkle with salt, let sit in the sun for several hours, rinse and wash. Never use bleach on orange sunscreen stains.

How to prevent sunscreen from staining clothes?

Three things help considerably. First, let the sunscreen fully absorb into your skin before getting dressed. Second, pretreat the collar and shoulder areas with dish soap or a stain remover pen before washing, even if you don’t see a visible stain. Third, if you are in a hard water area and using a chemical sunscreen, consider switching to a mineral formula (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) that does not contain avobenzone and will not cause an orange rust reaction.
