What we’re looking for in Startup Battlefield 2026 and how to apply in time for the May 27 deadline | TechCrunch

Every year I read thousands of Starter Battleground applications. And every year I see the same pattern: the founders who belong to this scene are often the ones who barely applied at all.

They think it’s too early. They think they need more traction. They think the program is aimed at companies that are more advanced than them.

So here’s what we’re really looking for and how to make sure your application reflects it. The deadline to consider is May 27, tomorrow… Time is running out so you can apply here!

And if you’re not up to speed on the details of this year’s Startup Battlefield, it’s once again part one of Disruption TechCrunchwhich will take place in San Francisco from October 13 to 15 and will end with the crowning of this year’s future champion. And this list of champions includes incredible companies, from giants like Cloudflare and Discord, to the latest generation of winners, which you can discover in detail here.

What makes a company selected for Startup Battlefield

Starter Battleground is not a competition for the finest companies. It never was. This is a competition reserved for the most promising.

We look for companies whose ideas seem significantly different and category-defining, with the potential to make a major impact in their industry or geography. For each application, the question we ask ourselves is simple: does this change anything? Not gradually. Truly.

Product and disruption. What are you building and does it represent a real change in the way something works? We are not looking for a better version of what already exists. We are looking for what makes the existing version obsolete.

The founding team. Why you, why now, why this problem? Your origin story is part of the app. Founders who can clearly articulate their beliefs, not just their market size, are the ones who stand out.

Industrial and geographic diversity. The Startup Battlefield 200 is a global cohort. We are actively seeking companies from all corners of the world and across all technology sectors. If you’re building something important in a geographic area or industry that doesn’t often get the spotlight, that matters to us.

What does not disqualify you from Startup Battlefield

Get media coverage. Local coverage is good. Industry coverage is good. Some founder profiles are suitable. We look for companies whose core technology has not yet found its moment of glory. If you’ve received some coverage but the product hasn’t been featured, that’s exactly what Disrupt is for. Apply and show us what you’ve got.

In pre-launch. You need a working MVP, but you don’t need customers. You don’t need income. Pre-launch companies are really welcome.

Having applied previously. Many Startup Battlefield 200 companies applied more than once before being selected. A previous rejection says nothing about the future of your business or your chances this time.

Collect money. Bootstrapped, pre-seed and seed businesses are all welcome. Series A companies are considered on a case-by-case basis, particularly founders building in capital-intensive industries or markets where funding dynamics differ from Silicon Valley norms.

Tips for a Strong Startup Battlefield App

Show that your product works. That’s the most important thing. Not a model. Not a simulation. This is not an animated explainer video with catchy background music. Your MVP in action, in real time. Even if it’s hard, even if it’s a screen recording of your phone. We want this to work.

Know your competitive landscape. “We have no competitors” is not a credible answer and raises questions about your understanding of your market. Name your competitors, acknowledge them honestly, then explain clearly and precisely why you win. This is one of the most important parts of the application and one of the most often underdeveloped.

Tell your story. Why did you create this company? What did you see that others didn’t see? What makes you the right person to build it? The founding story is a significant part of how we evaluate teams and it’s the part that most founders buy into. Don’t skip it.

Don’t over-polish. Write clearly, show the product, tell the truth about where you are. We can see around the rough edges. What we struggle to see is an app that has been so carefully managed that the company itself is invisible.

Resubmit if necessary. If you submit before you’re ready, don’t panic. You can resubmit until the May 27 deadline.. You cannot modify an application already submitted, but you can submit a new one.

Learn what it takes from the founders who’ve done it

Build modeTechCrunch’s podcast for beginning founders, is the best place to start. Hear directly from past Battlefield companies like Foresighted AI And smooththe founders of groups like Artisan and TaskRabbit, and prominent investors like General catalyst about what it takes to build a business worthy of being put on the world stage.

Deadline for applying to Startup Battlefield

Closing of applications May 27, 2026And you can still apply here. The selected companies are informed approximately two months before Disruption TechCrunch.

If you’re on the fence, apply. The worst outcome is that you don’t get selected this cycle and will have a stronger application next year for going through it.

We built this program to find you before the world does. The application is your first pitch.
