Heading to the shore is the default summer trip, but this year the idea of crowded boardwalks, beach traffic, and protecting a bucket of chips from dive-bombing seagulls didn’t exactly excite me. Instead, I headed towards Pedlar Village in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. One of Pennsylvania’s most unique destinations, Peddler’s Village is an 18th-century colonial-style village with more than 60 outdoor shops, a 67-room inn, and even a restored working antique carousel from 1922. With 8 full-service restaurants, a tasting room, a wine tasting room, and treats of all kinds, Peddler’s Village is a foodie’s playground.

With country charm tucked into every corner, Peddler’s Village is like a real-life Mayberry that attracts visitors year-round. One of my favorite things is that in between searching for treasures in quaint shops, you can also enjoy the outdoors by strolling winding brick paths with lush flower gardens. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the good weather while shopping.

This summer, the village transforms into a road trip across the American country with life-size sand sculptures celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary, as well as the magical surprise of Santa and Mrs. Claus taking their summer vacation here in July. You should also know that USA TODAY named Peddler’s Village America’s second-largest shopping centerso if you’re thinking of visiting, now is the time.

The story of Peddler’s Village: How it all started with a farmers’ market and a California dream Village Green Gazebo and Pine Wreath and Candle | Photo: Better Living After a few trips to California in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Earl Jamison, a lifelong Bucks County resident who ran a farmers’ market, found himself impressed by the romantic, storybook-style architecture he discovered at Carmel-by-the-Sea and Disneyland. So much so that he had the idea of creating something similar at home. Securing a $6,000 loan from his uncle, Earl purchased a 6-acre former chicken farm in the small town of Lahaska, Pennsylvania. Seamlessly integrating the farm’s original historic buildings with the design of its charming colonial shopping village, Earl opened Peddler’s Village with a single restaurant (the Cock ‘n Bull) and 14 stores. With much success and growth over the years, Peddler’s Village now spans over 42 acres and is considered one of the area’s favorite destinations for shopping and events throughout the year.

Tourist sites in the sand: an American road trip Tourist sites in the sand: an American road trip | Photo: Better Living All summer long, guests can experience an epic coast-to-coast adventure in Bucks County. Tourist sites in the sand: an American road tripa village-wide display of magnificent sand sculptures celebrating America’s 250th birthday. Master sand sculptors recreate the natural wonders, national monuments and triumphs of humanity in five major regions of the country: the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest and West. The free exhibition runs from June 1 to August 31, 2026.

At a glance: From June 1 to August 31, 2026 | Free and open to the public | Self-guided road trip through the five regions | Full event details

In addition to viewing the sculptures, guests can pick up a field guide from the Visitor & Event Center to begin a self-guided educational adventure through the five regions. In between visits, Village restaurants serve regional specialties throughout the month of June: Northeastern fare at Cock ‘n Bull, Southeastern at Hart’s Tavern, Midwestern at Peddler’s Pub, Southwest at Buttonwood Grill and West Coast at Earl’s New American.

The sculptures were created by two world-class teams. The Sandtastic Team (Tampa Bay), with over 30 years of experience and a Guinness World Record for the tallest sandcastle ever built by hand in less than 100 hours of work, and Sand sculptures by John Gowdya retired Atlantic City firefighter who won first place in almost every major sand sculpting competition on the planet. Former clients include Pope Francis at the Vatican and the White House Memory Commission.

Experience Christmas in July: Santa’s summer vacation Santa reading his summer itinerary at Peddler’s Village | Photo: Peddler’s Village We love Peddlers’ Village at Christmas. But who said holiday magic only happens in December?

From July 24 to 26, 2026, Santa’s summer vacation brings the world’s most loved couple to Bucks County for their summer vacation. Santa and Mrs. Claus will stay at the Golden Plow Inn and explore all that the village has to offer. Families can meet them by visiting the Sights in Sand exhibit, visiting the stores for this year’s must-have gifts, and dining at the village’s restaurants.

Don’t miss the Santa photo hunt and tropical-themed party on Friday, July 25, with pay-as-you-go food and drinks, live music and photo ops with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Kids can even enjoy a free snow and foam party. Because what is Christmas without a little snow, even in summer?

For savory flavor lovers, try the classic white cheddar, the Cheesy Doodle (which tastes just like a cheese doodle), the spicy Buffalo Blue, or the Sweet Habanero.

Taste Artisanal Honey in Tricky Situations

After a visit to Delicate situations and a conversation with store owner Stephen, I now appreciate bees and the wonder that is honey even more. Stephen, a food chemist expert in a technique called retaining, offers artisan raw honey in an incredible selection of flavors that I’ve never seen anywhere else. The honey is 100% raw, meaning it is not heated or processed, preserving its beneficial nutrients and full flavor. We had to bring home the dark chocolate, habanero, ginger, and anise honey, but their blueberry, raspberry, and green apple honey had me daydreaming about baking projects for weeks.

Enjoy gourmet infused oils and vinegars at Extra Virgin

Alongside Delicate Situations, Extra Virgin offers premium artisan olive oils and infused vinegars in an in-store experience similar to a wine tasting. Browse and taste freely, then have your oil and vinegar selections mixed at their bar to discover your perfect combinations. One delicious flavor combination we tried called “Sicily in a Jar” was a blend of their Meyer lemon infused olive oil and blood orange vinegar. Absolutely perfect for summer.

The hottest sauce is called “The End: Flatline Hot Sauce”, made with reapers, ghost peppers, scorpion peppers, 7 jars of chocolate douglah and a heavy dose of pepper extract. Customers must sign a waiver and be 18 or older to try it. Our personal favorites: Serrano Lime, Scorpion Death Stalker, Horseradish Oyster, and Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce.

Any day with wine is a good day. And one of the best places in the village to relax with a drink is at Nissley Vineyards Tasting Room. This satellite location of the Bainbridge, Pennsylvania winery sells its award-winning, locally produced wines by the glass and offers wine tastings and full bottles to go. In summer, that means wine granitas, which taste as good as they look. We recommend sitting outside their terrace to enjoy the picturesque village ambiance.

Grab coffee and the best cinnamon rolls ever at Mama Hawk’s

When my caffeine craving hits me in the village, one of my favorite products is Mama Hawk’s Kitchen and Cafe. This adorable cafe with a modern farmhouse vibe serves specialty coffees and homemade pastries, bagels, cookies, muffins, paninis and pizza. But there is one thing not to be missed: the cinnamon buns. Soft, moist and perfectly glazed, baked daily in a variety of special flavors. The coffee is great here, but whatever you do, be sure to grab some rolls to go. You can thank me later.

Try an authentic Liège waffle at Nina’s Waffles & Ice Cream

On a hot summer day in the village, we headed to Nina’s waffles and ice cream. In addition to small-batch ice creams with truly delicious flavors, Nina’s specializes in Liège waffles: a Belgian-style waffle made with a leavened brioche-style dough, sprinkled with coarse sugar before pressing, creating a beautiful caramelization and a slight crunch along the irregular edges of the waffle.

We garnished our waffle with a ball of their Crazy crack: Madagascar vanilla ice cream with salty cracker pieces, caramel pieces and chocolate. One bite and we fell in love. Don’t miss the toppings like dulce de leche, whipped cream and sprinkles!

Dine at Cock ‘n Bull, Peddler’s Village’s flagship restaurant Cock ‘n Bull Dining Room | Photo: Better Living The first restaurant in the village, celebrating more than 60 years of activity, Rooster and bull has been a tradition for the residents here for generations. The menu mixes fresh seasonal dishes with long-time classics like Chicken pot pie And French onion soup.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken at Cock ‘n Bull | Photo: Better Living On a recent visit, we loved the Buttermilk Fried Chicken appetizer served on cornbread with bourbon honey syrup (exceptional), and the Roasted Apple Flatbread with ricotta, baked apples, fresh greens, spiced honey, and an apple-citrus vinaigrette (generous enough to share as a light meal). For the dish, the 6oz. Filet mignon with a Burgundy reduction proves exactly why Cock ‘n Bull is famous for its steaks.

Prime rib fondant at Cock ‘n Bull | Photo: Better Living Tip for First Fridays: On the first Friday of each month, Cock ‘n Bull next door offers a Prime rib fondant with fries and a refillable soda for just $16.75. A good reason to plan your visit on this date and visit both restaurants.

Roasted Apple Flatbread at Cock N Bull in Peddler’s Village. | Photo: Better Living Don’t leave without dessert. We ordered both Crunchy strawberry cake with layers of strawberry cake, cream cheese buttercream and strawberry shortcake crumbs, and the Seasonal Crème Brûléecurrently a flavored and absolutely delicious funnel cake.

Enjoy cocktails, small bites and live music at Red Fox Lounge The Red Fox cocktail and mojito at the Red Fox Lounge | Photo: Better Living Located in the lobby of Cock ‘n Bull Restaurant, Red Fox Salon turned out to be much more than we expected. What started as a plan to come over for cocktails turned into a whole evening. It’s a truly cozy place to slow down, sip something nice and settle in before dinner.

What to order: Ask The red foxthe house signature made with Hornitos Plata, triple sec, lime juice, raspberry puree and cranberry juice. It’s perfectly balanced and exactly what you want to have in your hand when the music starts. THE Mojitos is another big call.

Brad Staudle performing at Red Fox Lounge | Photo: Better Living Every Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the lounge welcomes Local choicesa weekly live music series featuring a different local artist each week. We caught Brad Staudle and the vibe was perfect: intimate, unhurried, and exactly the kind of thing that makes Peddler’s Village feel like more than just a shopping trip.

happy hour takes place Monday to Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with cocktails, glasses of wine and draft beers. The menu features bites like All-American Smash Burgers, Reuben Spuds and Chips & Dip. Arrive early for happy hour, stay for the music.

Try the menu at Hart’s Tavern The bar at Hart’s Tavern | Photo: Better Living We had an absolutely delicious meal at Hart Tavern. This place has a super laid back and timeless old-school pub vibe that never goes out of style. To begin with, we had Pretzel Bites served with beer cheese and dill pickle dip, and the Elote Corn Bites with tajin aioli, queso fresco and cilantro.

Nashville Chicken Sandwich at Hart’s Tavern | Photo: Better Living THE Nashville Chicken Sandwich is a must-have for anyone who loves warmth. A crispy chicken cutlet coated in hot Nashville oil, loaded with dill pickles and collard greens slaw on a brioche bun. It hits all the right notes: crunchy, spicy, tangy and satisfying.

The Italian Roast Pork and Buffalo Fries Sandwich at Hart’s Tavern | Photo: Better Living THE Italian Roast Pork Sandwich is absolutely stellar: tender pulled pork, sweet marinated peppers, a long tangy spread, aged provolone and garlic aioli. The Buffalo Fries on the side turned up the heat perfectly. Hart’s also offers a variety of craft beers on tap and in bottles, wines by the glass and signature cocktails to complement the meal.

Carne Asada at Buttonwood Grill | Photo: Better Living Another new addition worth ordering is the Roasted meat: a nicely seared skirt steak topped with chimichurri sauce, accompanied by dirty rice and a generous portion of grilled zucchini, yellow squash and carrots. The chimichurri is bright and grassy, and the steak is very charred. A solid dinner option when you want something a little heartier than a burger or pizza.

Earl’s New American is the place for steaks and seafood

For a casual dinner in a refined, rustic-modern setting, Earl’s New American offers a menu inspired by farm-to-table ingredients and infusions of local and international flavors. From raw bar options to steaks, starters, fresh seafood and pastas, there’s something for everyone.

Lobster Dumplings at Earl’s New American | Photo: Better Living Some of our favorite starters: Lobster dumplings with lemongrass, ginger, chili oil, sweet soy and crispy potato sticks sprinkled with togarashi; Burrata with spring onion and berry compote, fried tomatoes and crushed pistachios; And KeftedesGreek beef meatballs with tzatziki, cucumber salad and sesame seeds.

Shrimp and Grits at Earl’s New American | Photo: Better Living Earl’s recently updated its long-running Shrimp and Grits to a new version that we loved: Shrimp and Grits with Creole Tasso ham tomato sauce, crispy okra, roasted Brussels sprout hash and Cabot cheddar grits. We will definitely order it again. THE Crab Cake Sandwich is another remarkable element. Even the guests from Maryland rave about it, which says a lot. Don’t skip dessert either: Orange espresso tart And Citrus and hazelnut bar are both exceptional.

If you come for lunch, don’t miss the Korean beef bowla lunch-only dish with steamed jasmine rice, scallions, kimchi, carrots, snow peas, and Korean barbecue sauce. It’s one of the tastiest and most satisfying things on the menu and a great reason to plan a midday stop at Earl’s.

THE Crab bisque is seriously one of the best on the market. This is a must order on every visit.

Orange Espresso Torte at Earl’s New American | Photo: Better Living Our advice: Avoid ordering the crab cake as a sandwich and instead order a steak with a crab cake on the side. Instant surf and turf, and honestly one of the best combinations on the menu.
