How to Dress for New York: Get Lauryn’s Elevated New York Look
How do you view color when packing for travel or everyday life?
EAST: Color plays an important role when selecting looks for an upcoming trip. When shopping for a client, I always take into consideration which color palette works best for their skin tone, as well as which colors work best for certain events.
When packing a client for a trip, I first check the weather at their destination because it really determines how we pack. Is the destination somewhere tropical? Nautical? It’s perhaps more of a warm atmosphere. It all depends on the destination and the weather.
Most clients have their favorite colors and I will always try to incorporate them into our looks. For example, if the client likes darker colors and is traveling somewhere warm, I will include options such as black, brown, or navy swimsuits, black or navy sheer cover-ups, flowy bottoms, and darker shades of linen.
How do Lauryn’s personality, career and schedule influence your choices?
EAST: Personality plays a lot in how I dress my clients; This is always something I consider first when selecting items. Lauryn has a very classic, chic and effortless style and I will always stay true to that.
I like to add interesting pieces here and there, whether it’s a handbag or a unique pair of sunglasses. We try to stay classic, monochrome, simple but perfectly tailored, elegant and modern. Lauryn has a crazy schedule; she travels often and likes things to be easy to unpack. We always select looks in advance and label and prepare them for each day and night.
What is the mindset when it comes to dressing for a specific location, particularly New York?
EAST: The location really sets the scene when we plan an upcoming trip. Since Lauryn is traveling to New York and it’s spring, we’re packing lots of neutrals with pops of color-blocking, as well as navy and black suits.
She has a few press-related events that we have planned, but I always pack looks for downtime too, whether it’s activewear or casual wear. It’s always a good idea to bring a some looks you can go down for a coffee or something fancy to throw on for shopping.
Dressing for New York is ultimately about mastering the art of transition. The city is the final stop, and in spring the atmosphere is one of renewed energy and “moving” elegance.
Our state of mind for this trip is “perfect cut and effortless edge” focusing on lightweight suits that can be divided into separate pieces to give it maximum versatility.
