Dua LipaLavish wedding celebrations in Sicily don’t just draw attention to the star-studded guest list.
As a singer and Callum Turner continue their multi-day festivities in Palermo, residents’ growing frustration has turned parts of the city into a battleground over public access, business disruptions and heavy security measures.
While local officials celebrate the international significance the event brings, not everyone is thrilled to see their city transformed for one of the most high-profile celebrity weddings of the year.
Dua Lipa’s wedding sparks backlash from angry residents

The strongest reaction to Dua Lipa’s wedding has come from locals who say public spaces are being taken over by private celebrations.
Protest posters appeared around Piazza Croce dei Vesperi, one of the areas affected by the festivities. Written in Italian and English, the signs carried messages such as “Palermo is not for rent. Public spaces belong to everyone.”
Others offered even harsher criticism, including “Our place is not your living room” and “Palermo is not for the rich.”
The campaign gained momentum after reports of parts of the city center being closed to accommodate weddings.
A local social justice group also encouraged residents upset by excessive tourism to welcome the singer by displaying posters from their balconies.
Although no major protests are expected, the public reaction echoes the controversy surrounding Jeff Bezos’ wedding celebrations in Venice, which also faced criticism from locals.
Dua Lipa’s marriage leaves businesses facing disruption

Beyond the posters, some local business owners expressed concerns about lost revenue during one of Palermo’s busiest weekends.
Reports say organizers paid the local council €10,000 ($11,640) to use Piazza Croce, where parking restrictions and access limitations remain in effect until Saturday.
Businesses overlooking the square would have been asked to close, while residents with balconies overlooking the square would have been asked to keep shutters closed.
Rumors circulated that residents had been offered €1,000 ($1,163) in compensation, although no one approached was willing to publicly discuss the claims.
One person simply said Daily Mail“We can’t say anything. We had to sign an agreement. Our lips are sealed.”
Another business owner near Villa Valguanera expressed frustration with road closures affecting customer traffic. “I am delighted that they are getting married but for us it means a loss of business for the day. There is no point in opening because no one will be able to reach us,” they said.
Lipa’s wedding security operation takes over Palermo
As Dua Lipa celebrations continue, security around the event has become impossible to miss.
Police and private security teams surrounded key venues, while black screens were erected in parts of the city to prevent the public from viewing the festivities.
Metal barriers have also been installed to create protected arrival areas for VIP guests. More than 50 bodyguards from Rome and London were reportedly dispatched to help secure the wedding.
The restrictions go beyond crowd control. Temporary drone-free zones have been introduced around wedding venues, and even public bins have been removed in some areas.
A resident living next to Villa Valguanera described an unexpected encounter with security personnel as he left to go shopping.
“I left my house to do some shopping and took a shortcut in front of the villa and two mountain men jumped on me,” he said. “They were wearing black T-shirts with the word security and asked me what I was doing. I said I lived here and was going shopping. They thought I was a paparazzi.”
Lipa’s wedding celebrations expand to luxury Sicilian venues

As the controversy grows, the wedding itself continues on a grand scale. Dua Lipa and Turner arrived in Sicily after a legal wedding ceremony in London on May 31 and are staying at the Villa Igiea hotel, where suites could cost around £6,000 ($8,000) per night.
The couple reportedly booked an entire floor overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Thursday’s celebrations began with an outdoor cocktail party at the hotel, while Friday’s schedule included events at the Galleria Moderna, which was rented for €10,000 ($11,600) and closed to the public for part of the day.
Another reception is planned at Villa Valguanera in Bagheria, where reports suggest Elton John may perform during the festivities.
The total cost of the wedding is estimated at around 1.5 million euros ($1.7 million).
Dua Lipa’s marriage enjoys strong support from Palermo leaders
Despite criticism from some residents, city leaders welcomed the attention the event generated. Palermo Mayor Roberto Sgalla welcomed the singer’s decision to return after already visiting the city and falling in love with it.
“The fact that a world-class artist like Dua Lipa chose Palermo to celebrate her wedding, and this only a year after her previous visit, confirms the attractiveness of the city today at an international level,” he said.
While acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the temporary restrictions, Sgalla stressed that the measures were implemented for public safety and that the benefits would extend beyond the wedding weekend.
“We must not forget the strengthening of the image that Palermo receives from occasions like this,” he said.
Tourism official Antonio Rini shared the same sentiment, describing the wedding as “a great honor” for Palermo.
He added that the arrival of internationally renowned guests would help introduce the city to a global audience and enhance its appeal as a destination for future visitors.
