On June 5 at Summer Game Fest, director Naoki Hamaguchi appeared on stage to give us our first look Final Fantasy 7 reveal, the third and final installment of the Square Enix game Final Fantasy 7 remake of the trilogy.
However, we didn’t just get one trailer, we actually got two, like in the initial release. reveal the trailer was followed by a gameplay trailer which contained additional clues about what to expect. That’s over seven minutes of footage in total. Here’s what we’ve noticed so far.
Just be warned, if you haven’t played the original 1997 version of Final Fantasy 7this article will contain a lot of spoilers, because the people at Square Enix have very cleverly hidden many references and callbacks here for those who already know the plot.
Sephiroth doesn’t look the same Square-Enix Alright, time to get the obvious one out of the way first; yes, Sephiroth doesn’t really look like himself Revelationand it is because the Angel has one wing will not be voiced by Tyler Hoechlin in the latter part of the FF7 remake of the trilogy.
Although Hoechlin voiced Sephiroth in both Remake And Renaissancehe will not return to reprise his role for the third and final entry. Instead, Travis Willingham will take over, who confirmed the news in an article on X June 6: “I am absolutely honored to join the incredible cast of @finalfantasyvii and take up the mantle of Sephiroth in this third installment. I know how important he is to so many people, and I approach this with absolute respect and heart.”
At this point, all we know is that a “scheduling conflict” is the reason for Hoechlin’s non-return, as director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed in an interview. It’s a shame, but I think Willingham will do a great job.
Menu portraits are an OG FF7 Reference This one is just a cute little detail, but I love it too much not to point it out. As hundreds of people online have already noticed, the in-game portraits of party members Revelation are all references to the same portraits in the original Final Fantasy 7.

Some don’t fit perfectly, like, for example, Cid doesn’t smoke in his room. Revelation portrait. Others, however, are individual remakes, such as Yuffie’s portrayal. She looks absolutely crazy with that big smile. Revelationthat’s exactly what she looks like FF7. In fact, she looks even more unbalanced Revelationif that’s even possible.
Dude, where’s my deadly snowboarding minigame after Aerith? Aerith’s death was handled perfectly in the 1997 release of Final Fantasy 7 and in the 2024 version of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirthbut there is one side in which the original game still has the advantage; the dark scene is immediately followed by a snowboarding mini-game.
If for some reason you don’t know, the Cloud is full SSX Tips mode on a snowy mountain just minutes after Sephiroth killed Aeirth. I know the mini-game has become a joke among fans, which is why I’m curious how Revelation plans to deal with this strange scene, given that Renaissance essentially ends with Aerith’s death.
Given the way this is all playing out right now, that means Revelation should basically open the snowboarding mini-game… which isn’t featured in any of the trailers we have so far. This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s been removed, but I think it could be toned down slightly this time, as it was a strangely radical and tubular experience in the original game.
The party celebrates without a cloud So, I know I already said there would be spoilers, but this one is pretty big, so look away for the next few paragraphs if you haven’t played the original. Final Fantasy 7. Considering where we last left things Final Fantasy 7: Rebirthfans should probably already know where we’re going at the start of Revelation; North Crater.
This is where Sephiroth ends up messing with Cloud’s mind, after which Cloud will be kicked out of the group for a good chunk of time. Final Fantasy 7 Disc 2. This is also a pretty important segment of the game, in which Tifa and Cid lead the party while Cloud is out of action. There are plenty of shots in the reveal trailer for Revelationlike the photo of the whole group standing on the Highwind without Cloud, and a team skydiving expedition that, unfortunately, is also without Cloud.
I think the trailers for Final Fantasy 7: Revelation have been put together in a way that hides this from those who haven’t played the OG game, but also seems to simultaneously imply that Cloud will be absent from the party for an equally long period of time.
Hey, it’s Wutai! And the Cloud is here! Wutai is a strange place in the 1997 version of Final Fantasy 7because it is possible to visit the region without ever recruiting Yuffie. If for some reason you do things this way, Wutai will basically be a useless place to visit. Without Yuffie, there are no quests and none of the traders will sell you stuff either.
You can also visit locations without having access to Yuffie and Cloud at the same time, which is an equally pointless endeavor. Whereas Renaissance I swapped a lot of Yuffie’s story, I don’t think it’s possible to avoid recruiting her into Revelationsince you have already recruited her in Renaissance. However, even though most Wutai scenes from Revelation the gameplay trailer does not feature Cloud, he appears briefly in the background at least once.
This kinda makes me think that, just like in the original game, you might be able to play around with the order in which you complete tasks in Revelation. This is a very long lead up for me saying I hope this means we can still get the secret scene where Tifa recruits Yuffie. It’s because I find it very funny that the nickname given by Yuffie to Tifa in this scene is “Breasts.”
Sapphire Weapon is back, but is it a boss fight this time? You remember Sapphire Weapon from the OG Final Fantasy 7? Don’t feel bad if you can’t, because unlike every other weapon in the original FF7Sapphire Weapon can’t actually be fought. Spoiler alert: it’s because he gets his head ripped off during a cutscene.
Sapphire Weapon has been a boss in others Fantasy Finale games, but its strong inclusion in the trailer for Revelation could imply that we will be able to fight it in a manner FF7 game for the first time. Regardless, I hope he does a little more with his limited screen time this time around, other than, you know, dying and setting up the secret boss fight with Emerald Weapon.
Then again, I’m pretty sure the short scene at the end of the gameplay trailer is a remake of the same scene where Sapphire Weapon gets shot in the face. FF7so maybe not. Instead, maybe they’ll turn into a mini-game that lets you take control of Rufus Shinra, so you can use Sapphire Weapon in 360° without range yourself.
Vincent’s Limit Break forms have unique synergy attacks Square-Enix At the Olympics FF7Vincent’s Limit Breaks work very differently from other characters, as Vincent’s Limit Breaks allow him to transform into a handful of different creatures. In Revelationit’s the same thing, as the gameplay trailer shows Vincent’s Galian Beast form, which appears to be fully controllable (unlike the OG FF7).
The real detail here, however, is that Vincent’s Limit Breaks seem to have unique synergy attacks with other characters. I’m not sure the Synergy skills will work the same as in Renaissancebecause it allowed each character to unlock one along with everyone else in the party, but if they do… well, let’s just say that means the developers are going to have to put in five times as much effort when it comes to Vincent.
Yes, Final Fantasy 7: Revelationwe see the FITS If you only watched the trailer for Final Fantasy 7 revealyou will have missed a lot of context on the new “FITS” mechanic, as most of the information about the new system was contained in the gameplay trailer.
The “Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear” system appears to function as a job/class mechanic, in that it allows party members to change their move sets by simply swapping outfits. The interesting thing to note from the gameplay trailer is that FITS don’t seem to change your stats in any way, so you’ll still want to look for better gear if you need to improve your attributes.
Another important thing to note is that while equipping FITS seems to give your party members a unique skin, there is a “Change Outfit” prompt at the bottom of the screen in the gameplay trailer. This kind of implies to me that you could equip one of these FITS while changing your appearance, allowing you to use its moveset without being locked into a specific look. Handy if that turns out to be the case, because Cloud looks like an idiot in that Warrior outfit.
Was this Sephiroth and Cloud scene edited to remove a spoiler? Okay, I’m going to be completely honest with you; I wasn’t the first person to notice this, as many FF7 fans have already pointed out that one of the gameplay scenes revealed a trailer for Revelation This is eerily reminiscent of a very crucial scene from the original 1997 game. However, it almost seems like it was lightly edited to remove a pretty heavy spoiler.
At 30 second mark In the gameplay trailer, you can see Cloud and Sephiroth standing strangely close to each other, to the point where it seems like they’re suddenly allies. If you played the original FF7this might give you flashbacks to the scene where Sephiroth messes with Cloud’s head and forces him to voluntarily hand over the Black Materia to the North Crater.
It even seems that they are tensing something in the scene of Revelationexcept that at none of them holds anything. I think fans picked up on something here, and the Black Materia was removed from the scene for the trailer, in an effort to protect the first time. FF7 spoiler fans.
