Final Fantasy 9 is easily the Final Fantasy game that receives the most requests for rework outside FF7 and maybe FF8. Fans wanted him to get the same treatment as Cloud and co. received in 2020 and, for a while, felt like it was possible. Square Enix isn’t shy about remaking or remastering its library of incredible JRPGs, so it seemed obvious that the studio would eventually remake at least some of its Fantasy Finale games, the most important being FF9.
Unfortunately, it seems that Final Fantasy 9 official returnwhich fans thought would arrive any day now, could have been put on temporary, or even permanent, hiatus. This is dark news, which takes the project further and further from reality. Fans apparently understood this and started rallying around each other, reacting to the existence of the remake, or lack thereof, and just trying to piece it all together while supporting each other.
For context, it seemed, at one point, that a Final Fantasy 9 a remake was in the works. In 2021, a disastrous NVIDIA leak revealed a handful of projects in production, the main one being FF9. Several of the projects revealed in the leaked documents turned out to be real, so many assumed the same would be true for this one. Final Fantasy 9 remake. It wouldn’t be so surprising to see a mark-new FF9 projectespecially since Square Enix has a penchant for revisiting old IPs.
However, recently, a close relative, NatetheHate, said that he thinks that FF9 redo to be on iceat least according to his sources, and that we shouldn’t expect to see him anytime soon. It could be that the perceived failure of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has affected Square Enix’s chances of investing that much into another remake of an older title, or it could simply be that the studio has lost all interest or confidence in the project. In any case, it seems that a FF9 the remake won’t happen anytime soon, and a recent Reddit the post seems to confirm this.
Lovers of FF9 and those who are simply excited about a potential remake have all lamented the loss of this supposed project, with user Nightwing24yuna (and many others) opining that “it would have really benefited from a remake” the most. The atmosphere is frankly a little austere among these fans, with user GargantaProfunda admitting that they had already done it “lost hope,” while editor ShyguyFlyguy simply stated: “it doesn’t happen“.
Of course, some users questioned the validity of the initial rumors, while others hoped it could eventually happen, with user Remote_Elevator_281 joking: “maybe in 30 years we will have the remake lol.“However, it feels like it’ll never happen, especially since even his core fans who would like to see a project like this come to life are feeling depressed and hopeless. There’s still a chance we’ll see a Final Fantasy 9 will do again eventually, but, for now, maybe fans should stop holding out hope and instead come together to support each other and mourn what could have been.
