Remember the so-called “flopfest” season which is the month of January. Only five months ago, Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson faced each other Mercya new film that follows a man falsely accused of murder, who is later tried by an AI-generated court.

The principle is simple: make the AI judge believe that you are innocent through a digital threshold, and you will be free. Don’t do it and you will die. There is no lawyer or jury, just your brain and access to your life via curated digital files.
After its theatrical release, it was on Prime Video for most of 2026, and I can’t discourage you enough from watching it. It’s far from the worst movie of the year so far, but it’s bad enough to be unmissable.
Without boring you too much, the production feels cheap, it struggles to maintain momentum, and Pratt (whose character is also hilariously named Chris) is restrained in a chair for 90% of the film. MercyThe runtime runs out incredibly quickly.

But let’s not talk about it Mercy…instead, we need to focus on the film Pratt recommended as a double bill. Not only does it serve as inspiration for Mercybut it’s arguably the most underrated Christopher Nolan film of all time.

“There is a little Memento in there,” Pratt told me shortly before Mercyliberation.
“He’s a character who doesn’t know what’s happening, and he’s unveiling the layers of his reality as he learns in real time what happened.”
As soon as he talks about it, I remember what an amazing viewing experience it was. Starring Guy Pearce and Carrie-Anne Moss, it follows insurance investigator Leonard Shelby (Pearce), who suffers from anterograde amnesia.
He uses notes and tattoos to search for the man he believes killed his wife, which is the last thing he remembers. That means we know as much as he does, making this one of the most unique and interactive crime thrillers of the last 26 years.
You are thrown back in time with so much confusion that you wonder if You Killed your ex-wife. It’s no secret what an exceptional director and storyteller Nolan is… but this was only his second film.
The talent was already out of reach, but it’s no surprise that given the number of Butchers released more recently (his Batman trilogy, Creation, And Oppenheimer, to name just a few), Memento was put on collective hold.
For Matrix fans, Carrie-Anne Moss is also the best female role Nolan could have chosen. Add in some snappy 2000s vibes and pangs of despair, and you’re about to stream a movie you’ll never forget (unlike Mercywhich you will hopefully do immediately).
