Why Summer is the Best Season at Merriweather Lakehouse
The hotel is located on seven wooded acres on 27 acres Lake Kittamaqundiand the bay windows that impressed us so much in winter have a completely different effect in summer. The lake is alive. The 1.4-mile trail fills with walkers and joggers first thing in the morning. The rooftop pool opens to a wide view of the water below. And the lake light in the evening, golden and faint on the water, is something you want a balcony for. This is why we consider this property one of Maryland’s most romantic hotels.
The Lakefront District of Columbia is also in full swing all season long, hosting outdoor festivals, culinary events, and community gatherings throughout the summer months. You can walk to most of them from the front door.
🎵 Walk to legendary live music Merriweather Post Pavilion, recognized by Billboard and Rolling Stone as one of America’s best outdoor amphitheaters, is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The venue has hosted legendary artists for over 50 years, from Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix to today’s biggest names. Walking to a summer concert and back is the whole point. Reserve your room when purchasing your tickets.
July 4th at Merriweather Lakehouse: America’s 250th Birthday
We were here on July 4, 2024 and it’s one of those nights that’s hard to explain without sounding like you’re selling too much. The fireworks go off just across the lake. The reflections on the water, the loud noises, the explosions filling the sky were incredible. We watched from the rooftop pool deck, then sat on the lake patio and ended the night on our own lakeside balcony. Three completely different views of the same spectacle. We saw many fireworks displays. This one was spectacular.
This year, the hotel is celebrating America’s 250th birthday with one of the best layouts in Howard County. Here’s everything that’s happening and how to be part of it.

The Rooftop Pool and Eagle Watch Lounge
Open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the rooftop pool is where summer at Merriweather Lakehouse comes to life. The pool overlooks Lake Kittamaqundi just below, with the forested hills of Howard County beyond. It’s a view that makes the water very easy to stay in.
Right next to the pool is the Eagle Watch Lounge. Get there late in the afternoon when the light begins to shine across the lake and you won’t want to leave. It fills up on summer weekends, so book early if you visit Friday through Sunday in July or August.
💡 Summer Pool Tips Head there early on summer mornings for a leisurely swim before the pool fills up. Rooftop views are best at golden hour, around 7-8 p.m. in June and July. Year-round pool access is available next door at Pearl Spa if you visit outside of pool season. Lake Kittamaqundi in summer: a playground by the lake
The 27 acres Lake Kittamaqundi which surrounds the hotel is the liveliest in summer. The 1.4-mile paved trail is ideal for morning runs or evening walks, and it connects to the larger Columbia trail system if you want to extend your walk to Wilde Lake for a 2.9-mile round trip.
Summer is also the best time on the water. The lake welcomes kayakers and paddleboarders throughout the season, and the lake’s waterfront area hosts festivals and community events most weekends. Lake Kittamaqundi is known for its sunsets, and with the Rookery Bar just steps away and benches lining the trail, you’ll have no shortage of places to watch one.
🦅 Birdwatching in summer The lake is active with birds all year round, but summer brings its own group of characters. Great blue herons are regulars, ospreys hunt over the water throughout the season, and the wooded edges of the trails are home to warblers and flycatchers. For a dedicated birdwatching experience, check out our complete guide to a birding getaway to Merriweather Lakehouse with species lists and best viewing times.
Dinner at lāk, Rookery and Osprey Cafe
We ate at Lak in winter and it was one of the best hotel restaurant meals we’ve had. In the summer, those picture windows do even more work, with the lake fully lit and the active Merriweather District just outside.
What to order Lak Restaurant: Maryland crab cakes served over forest mushroom risotto with lemon-garlic aioli are the signature dish, and since there’s nowhere better to eat Maryland crab than Maryland, don’t skip them. The chicken piccata and fried calamari are equally solid. Dessert comes from pastry chef Brian Holland, an International Culinary Center graduate who spent more than a decade at the Four Seasons in Baltimore. The Apple Crisp and the Skillet Cowboy Cookie Sundae are both worth the splurge.
The Rookery bar and lounge: Opens at 4 p.m. Good for a drink before or after dinner, with the best lake view in the hotel. The bar menu includes steak and cheese spring rolls, Bavarian pretzel sticks and the full lāk dinner menu if you want something more substantial in a casual setting. Creative cocktails, quality spirits and the best lake views in the hotel.
The Osprey Café: Gourmet Lavazza coffee and fresh pastries, including chocolate croissants, which are worth the detour alone. The morning after July 4th, we ended our time here with coffee and freshly baked scones before heading home. It was the right start. Take your coffee out to the lake.
THE Pearl Spa: a summer wellness getaway THE Pearl Spa is a short walk from the hotel and worth the time to build. The 27,000 square foot wellness center offers massages, body wraps, facials and manicures, as well as experiences you won’t find elsewhere: a halotherapy (salt) room, year-round pool and jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, cold plunge and THE Great Abyss, a multi-sensory meditation experience combining vibration, magnetotherapy and layered music for deep relaxation.
Healing Waters Wellness Package The hotel’s Healing Waters package is designed around a coordinated appointment at THE Pearl and includes:
Plush bathrobes and slippers for two at the hotel and Pearl A healthy and thoughtful welcome gift on arrival Sound machine, oil diffuser and essential oils in your room Breakfast for two at the lake the next morning Late check out at 1:00 p.m. Book the Healing Waters Package
