Why Summer is the Best Season at Merriweather Lakehouse Arrival at Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel | Photo: Better Living The hotel is located on seven wooded acres on 27 acres Lake Kittamaqundiand the bay windows that impressed us so much in winter have a completely different effect in summer. The lake is alive. You notice it as soon as you enter the lobby. The light is different here, with trees filling every window with bright green. From early morning, walkers and joggers cover the 2.2 km trail. The rooftop pool opens to a wide view of the water below. And in the evening, the lake light turns golden and faint over the water, just the kind of view you want to have a balcony for.
The Lakefront District of Columbia is in full swing throughout the season, with outdoor festivals, culinary events and community gatherings filling the summer calendar. Most are just a few steps from the front door.
🎵 Walk to legendary live music Merriweather Post Pavilion, recognized by Billboard and Rolling Stone as one of America’s best outdoor amphitheaters, is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The venue has hosted legendary artists for over 50 years, from Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix to today’s biggest names. Walking to a summer concert and back is the move. Reserve your room when purchasing your tickets.
July 4th at Merriweather Lakehouse: America’s 250th Birthday 4th of July Fireworks from VIP Rooftop Pool Deck | Photo: Better Living We came back on July 4, 2026 and it was even better than 2024. The fireworks are going off just across the lake and the scale of the show for America’s 250th birthday was something else entirely. We watched from three locations over the course of the night and each one was completely different. From the rooftop pool deck, the entire sky lit up above the water. From the lake patio, the show unfolded through the trees above the lake. And from our own balcony, the reflections on the water, the thuds and explosions filling the sky made it seem like the best seat in Howard County. We saw many fireworks shows. This one is incredible.
THE 4th of July celebration at the hotel worth planning a complete stay in the surrounding area. This is how day and night unfold.

The lake’s barbecue buffet Le lāk July 4th BBQ Buffet | Photo: Better Living The barbecue buffet at Lāk runs from 5:00 p.m. with a last service at 8:00 p.m. and ends when the show begins. Reservations are made via OpenTable and are for indoor lāk dining only. We loaded our plates with BBQ chicken wings, brisket, grilled corn, cucumber and watermelon feta salad, baked beans, and baked mac and cheese. The red, white and blue cupcakes were a nice touch at the end. Get the watermelon margarita to accompany. The buffet was really well done and definitely worth it. It’s sold out for 2026, so if you’re planning for next year, start early. Check details and reservations here.
The lawn and live music The Community Lawn Celebration is free and open to all. Burgers, hot dogs, drinks, lawn games, DJ and live music. It’s what kicked off the 4th of July for us in 2024 and it’s exactly the right way to start the evening. The drone show and fireworks start just after 9 p.m., just across the lake.
The VIP Rooftop Experience 4th of July Fireworks at Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel | Photo: Better Living If you can get the Rooftop Escape package, get it. We experienced the VIP roof and it was one of the highlights of the trip. Exclusive access to Eagle Watch above the lake, elevated bites, cash bar and fireworks filling the sky right in front of you. The photos don’t fully capture what it feels like to be up there, with the pool glistening below and all the spectacle taking place on the water. The Rooftop Escape Package and Fireworks Deck are both sold out for 2026. If either is on your list for next year, don’t wait.
The Rookery Bar on July 4 The Rookery Bar is open during the celebration with a limited menu on a first come, first served basis. A good fallback solution if you missed the buffet reservation, which books up quickly.
📋 Good to know before you go The drone show and fireworks begin shortly after 9 p.m. Event times may change depending on weather. In the event of inclement weather, the expo will be rescheduled until July 5 in accordance with guidelines from the Columbia Association and Howard County. The Rooftop Pool and Eagle Watch Lounge The Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel Rooftop Pool Deck | Photo: Better Living Open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the rooftop pool is where summer at Merriweather Lakehouse comes to life. The terrace is warm wood, the lounge chairs are comfortable and the flags were hung along the railing when we were there for the fourth. The pool overlooks Lake Kittamaqundi just below, with the forested hills of Howard County beyond.
Just inside the pool is the Eagle Watch Lounge, air-conditioned and comfortable with sofas, tables and views of Columbia. It’s the kind of place where an afternoon drink turns into a long evening without much effort. There was a table of guests playing cards when we were there, which tells you the vibe. The west-facing windows beautifully capture the sunset in the summer. On July 4, the space was set up as a VIP event venue with a pop-up bar and buffet. It’s worth knowing even on a normal summer day.
💡 Summer Pool Tips Head there early on summer mornings for a leisurely swim before the pool fills up. The rooftop views are stunning all day long, but really special at golden hour, around 7-8 p.m. in June and July. Outside of the summer season, the neighboring LE Pearl Spa has year-round access to the pool and jacuzzi. Lake Kittamaqundi in summer: a playground by the lake Lake Kittamaqundi in Columbia, Maryland | Photo: Better Living The 27 acres Lake K ittamaqundi which surrounds the hotel is the liveliest in summer. The 1.4-mile paved trail is ideal for morning runs or evening walks, and it connects to the larger Columbia trail system if you want to extend your walk to Wilde Lake for a 2.9-mile round trip.
Summer is also the best time on the water. The lake hosts serious kayakers, paddleboarders, and bird watchers throughout the season, and the lake’s waterfront area hosts festivals and community events most weekends. Lake Kittamaqundi is particularly beautiful at sunrise in summer. Brew a coffee at Lavazza in your room and take it out onto your balcony, or grab one at Osprey Cafe and watch the morning break over the water.
The gardens and grounds around the hotel are in full bloom in summer. Black-eyed Susans, asters, zinnias and their accompanying pollinators line the trails. It’s the kind of thing you notice on a slow morning walk before anyone gets up.
🦅 Birdwatching in summer The lake is active with birds all year round, but summer brings its own group of characters. Great blue herons are regulars, ospreys hunt over the water throughout the season, and the wooded edges of the trails are home to warblers and flycatchers. For a dedicated birdwatching experience, check out our complete guide to a birding getaway to Merriweather Lakehouse with species lists and best viewing times.
Dinner at lāk, Rookery and Osprey Cafe Redfish at the Lāk restaurant | Photo: Better Living We ate at Lak for breakfast and dinner and it is one of our favorite hotel restaurants in Maryland. There’s a lot going on in the venue in the best way: tin arched ceiling, warm leather banquettes, colorful concert posters covering the walls, open kitchen and lakeside terrace when the weather permits. Our dinner server, Jayson, took great care of us each evening. He knew the menu inside and out, had perfect suggestions, and made us feel welcome every night. It’s this kind of service that turns a great meal into a reason to come back.
depending on breakfast French toast with cornflake crust | Photo: Better Living The lāk breakfast menu is worth sitting down for rather than grabbing and leaving. We tried several dishes each morning and the cornflake crusted French toast was the standout: a crispy golden crust with a side of berry compote, powdered sugar and a latte with true latte art. The country breakfast with two eggs any way you like, thick-cut bacon, hash browns, sourdough toast and orange juice is exactly what it should be. The Crab Benedict is the centerpiece: two poached eggs on a piece of crab on English muffins with Hollandaise sauce and hash browns on the side. Avocado toast with cherry tomatoes, feta and candied hazelnuts is a lighter, more robust option. Have a latte with anything.
Lake Dinner Caesar with lak-blackened salmon | Photo: Better Living Redfish is the made-to-order summer dinner. A golden crusted filet on asparagus and fingerling potatoes in a light butter sauce. It’s just what you need for a July evening with the lake outside your window. Start with the fried calamari or shrimp tostadas, both are delicious. Beet salad with arugula, goat cheese and candied pecans is a good lighter starter. For the Caesar, add the blackened salmon. Seriously, add the salmon. The Seafood Pappardelle is another signature dish worth ordering. For cocktails, the jalapeño margarita in the lāk heron glass packs a wonderful punch and pairs wonderfully with seafood. Dessert comes from pastry chef Brian Holland, an International Culinary Center graduate who spent more than a decade at the Four Seasons in Baltimore. Don’t skip it.
The Rookery Bar and Lounge Crab Cake Sliders at The Rookery | Photo: Better Living We had a late lunch at the Rookery around 3pm and highly recommend dining in this space. On a hot, humid summer afternoon in Maryland, this is exactly where you want to be. The large windows directly overlook the lake, while the room remains cool and comfortable. You can order the full lak menu here, making the lunch options more substantial than you might expect at a bar.
The Rookery Bar and Lounge at the Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel | Photo: Better Living We had the beef barbacoa tacos, the corn and crab chowder bread bowl, and the crab cake sliders. All three were good, but the chowder was the star. Rich, comforting and full of flavor, it was memorable even on one of the hottest days of summer. I hope it stays on the menu during the colder months.
Another particularly good pairing is the crab cake sliders on brioche with an Old Fashioned served in The Rookery glass.
The Rookery opens at 4 p.m. for evening service and fills up quickly, so get there early if you’re coming for dinner. The venue also hosts intimate concerts by larger bands, including a performance of The Dangerous Summer on July 3. Keep an eye on the calendar for similar events.
Osprey Coffee Morning at the Osprey Cafe at the Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel | Photo: Better Living Start your morning at Osprey Café. The Lavazza lattes are excellent, the pastries are fresh daily and the focaccia breakfast sandwich is exceptionally well made. For a grab-and-go breakfast, it punches well above its weight and was the perfect amount of food for a quick and enjoyable breakfast before we got home. The cinnamon roll, scone, and homemade Pop-Tart with pink frosting are all worth ordering.
Grab a lakeside table at The Rookery or find a seat at Osprey and let the morning take its time. We came back the morning after July 4th before heading home, and it was exactly the right start.

Summer rooms: what to book and why Hotel room at Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel | Photo: Better Living The Standard King and Standard Double Queen rooms are solid starting points with modern furnishings and partial lake views. The Lake View King is our top recommendation and the room we stayed in on July 4th. A king bed and a private balcony directly overlooking Lake Kittamaqundi. In summer, this balcony becomes an extension of your room. On the fourth, it becomes one of the best fireworks venues in Howard County.
The Double Queen Room with Lake View offers families the same balcony experience with two queen beds. Junior Suites add a separate living room and mini-fridge, ideal for a longer stay or special occasion. The Presidential Suite features a fully separate living room, dining area, four-poster bed and panoramic lake views. Limited availability, so book well in advance.
