Best portable Bluetooth boomboxes that play loud

As CNET’s portable audio reviewer for 10 years, I test many compact Bluetooth speakers. But if you want a speaker that can play loud and produce deeper sound, a Bluetooth boom box speaker is the way to go. Although all of the speakers on this list have rechargeable batteries and are considered portable speakers, some are quite beefy (they are sometimes called “party” speakers). To be eligible, they must weigh at least 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms). The majority weigh much more than that, but each has a built-in strap or handle that makes them easier to carry.

Turtlebox’s new Cub Bluetooth speaker for 2026 is essentially a scaled-down version of the company’s original speaker, now in its third generation. Although the Cub doesn’t play as loud as this speaker, I was impressed with its power level for its size and that it delivers relatively clean, detailed sound with strong bass performance. (The midrange, where the vocals live, is slightly forward.) Read the full review.

Benefits

  • Half the weight of the original Turtlebox (third generation), but still produces impressive volume with solid bass performance
  • Rugged waterproof and dustproof design with integrated handle and tie-down anchor
  • Floats
  • USB-C charging (original Turtlebox uses power adapter for charging)
  • Decent battery life (up to 14 hours)
  • Built-in mic for speakerphone capabilities

Disadvantages

  • Quite expensive
  • No companion app
  • No sound modes or equalizer option to modify the sound

I consider the smaller Boom 2 to be the best value among the current Soundcore by Anker Bluetooth speakers, as it delivers very powerful sound for a speaker that costs just over $100. But the larger and more expensive Boom 2 Plus is a better-sounding speaker that plays louder and produces more powerful sound with more bass. While it’s usually on sale for under $200, the bottom line is that it competes well with boom box speakers from JBL and Sony that cost over $400.

Benefits

  • Impressive sound with a fairly compact design
  • Competes well with more expensive boom box speakers
  • Charges via USB-C and has a charging power bank option
  • Fully waterproof and floats for beach or pool parties
  • LED lighting

Disadvantages

  • The smaller Boom 2 costs considerably less and offers better overall value
  • No dust resistance rating

I liked the original Soundcore Motion Boom, which was on our list of best Bluetooth speakers and was one of the best mini boom box Bluetooth speaker values in recent years, selling for around $80. The 3.75-pound Boom 2 costs more but sounds significantly better, with more than double the power rating of the original, so it not only plays louder, but puts out more bass and offers better clarity at higher volumes (it has two tweeters and a subwoofer). It also has some built-in LED lights to help create that party atmosphere. This is an impressive sounding speaker for its size and good value for money.

Benefits

  • Good price
  • Quite compact but delivering impressive sound with big volume and powerful bass
  • Waterproof and floats
  • USB output port
  • LED lighting

Disadvantages

  • No dust resistance rating

JBL made its fourth-generation Boombox 4 more powerful than the Boombox 3, but the speaker is actually lighter than its predecessor (13 pounds versus 14.7 pounds), offers better battery life (up to 28 hours at moderate volume levels instead of 24 hours), charges much faster, and has a higher waterproof rating (IP68 versus IP67). It also supports Auracast (Bluetooth 5.4), so you can connect the Boombox 4 to any of JBL’s new Auracast-enabled speakers.

Benefits

  • More powerful than Boombox 3 but lighter
  • Improved durability with IP68 rating (dustproof and fully waterproof)
  • Upgraded three-way speaker system with two 5-inch woofers, two 0.75-inch tweeters and three passive radiators
  • Strong, powerful bass with two bass boost modes
  • Strong battery life (up to 28 hours) Significantly faster recharge time (charges with USB-C cable or two-prong power cord included)
  • Customizable lighting
  • USB-C charging port and audio support

Disadvantages

  • Dear
  • Plays louder with more bass, but Boombox 3 may sound better to some ears
  • No auxiliary input

The Sony ULT Field 7 is the successor to Sony’s SRS-SG500 Bluetooth boom box, which I liked but lacked clarity compared to some of its competitors, including JBL’s boom box speakers. This new model not only sounds better but also offers an improved design with integrated handles on each side of the speaker, LED lighting and a new karaoke function (microphone not included). You can place the speaker vertically or lay it horizontally. The sound changes a bit with speaker orientation, but overall clarity and treble performance improved, and I thought the bass had better definition.

Benefits

  • Improved design with integrated handles
  • Can be placed vertically or placed horizontally
  • Improved clarity with powerful bass
  • Fully waterproof
  • Integrated lighting

Disadvantages

  • Charges with a cord, not USB-C

Best Wireless Bluetooth Boomboxes of 2026

Benefits

  • Rugged waterproof and dustproof design with integrated handle and tie-down anchor
  • Floats
  • USB-C charging (original Turtlebox uses power adapter for charging)
  • Decent battery life (up to 14 hours)

  • Quite expensive
  • No companion app

Turtlebox’s new Cub Bluetooth speaker for 2026 is essentially a scaled-down version of the company’s original speaker, now in its third generation. Although the Cub doesn’t play as loud as this speaker, I was impressed with its power level for its size and that it delivers relatively clean, detailed sound with strong bass performance. (The midrange, where the vocals live, is slightly forward.) Read the full review.

Like all Turtlebox speakers, the 5.3-pound Cub is very durable. It is also fully waterproof (IP67) and floats. While it doesn’t offer as rich, powerful sound or long battery life as the larger stock 10-pound speaker, it does have some key advantages, including its more compact size. This makes it easier to carry and store in a bag or backpack. I also liked that it has USB-C charging instead of the power adapter that the stock speaker requires for charging.

Equipped with Bluetooth 5.4, you can pair it with another Cub to create a stereo pair, or you can link the speaker to other Turtlebox Cubs, Rangers, Gen 3s and Grandes in party mode. Since there’s no Turtlebox companion app for its speaker, you do linking and pairing with the speaker buttons. Alas, you can’t change the sound profile since there are no EQ settings, but the default sound profile is fine and works especially well for outdoor listening.

Staying true to Turtle Box’s roots as a Bluetooth speaker for boating, the Cub features a tie-down anchor on each side and can also be placed vertically or laid horizontally with the driver pulling up. For those comparing the Cub to the even more compact Ranger, the Cub plays noticeably louder and delivers a more powerful sound. But the Ranger’s smaller form factor and built-in magnets will appeal to those looking for a more compact speaker that can be stuck to metal objects, like a gold trolley post.

I consider the smaller Boom 2 to be the best value among the current Soundcore by Anker Bluetooth speakers, as it delivers very powerful sound for a speaker that costs just over $100. While it’s usually on sale for under $200, the bottom line is that it competes well with boom box speakers from JBL and Sony that cost over $400.

This speaker has two 50-watt woofers and two 20-watt tweeters, Anker says, and charges via USB-C, which is nice. There’s also a charging option to charge your devices, and the Boom 2 Plus is rated for up to 20 hours of playback at moderate volume levels. The speaker features both a handle and a removable strap to make it easy to carry and is IPX7 waterproof. It also floats if you drop it in a body of water and has a customizable light show option.

Benefits

  • Good price
  • Quite compact but delivering impressive sound with big volume and powerful bass
  • Waterproof and floats
  • USB output port
  • LED lighting

Disadvantages

  • No dust resistance rating

I liked the original Soundcore Motion Boom, which was on our list of best Bluetooth speakers and was one of the best mini boom box Bluetooth speaker values in recent years, selling for around $80. The 3.75-pound Boom 2 costs more but sounds significantly better, with more than double the power rating of the original, so it not only plays louder, but puts out more bass and offers better clarity at higher volumes (it has two tweeters and a subwoofer). It also has some built-in LED lights to help create that party atmosphere. This is an impressive sounding speaker for its size and good value for money.

Waterproof (IPX7- rated) with a floating design, the speaker’s battery life is rated up to 24 hours at moderate volume levels (it charges via USB-C), and you can change the sound and customize the lighting with the Soundcore app for iOS and Android. There is also a USB output port for charging your devices.

JBL made its fourth-generation Boombox 4 more powerful than the Boombox 3, but the speaker is actually lighter than its predecessor (13 pounds versus 14.7 pounds), offers better battery life (up to 28 hours at moderate volume levels instead of 24 hours), charges much faster, and has a higher waterproof rating (IP68 versus IP67). It also supports Auracast (Bluetooth 5.4), so you can connect the Boombox 4 to any of JBL’s new Auracast-enabled speakers.

JBL has redesigned the internal speaker system, as the Boombox 4 features a three-way system with two 5-inch woofers, two 0.75-inch tweeters and three passive radiators, one of which faces the rear of the speaker. When it comes to sound, the Boombox 4 plays louder than the Boombox 3 and delivers bigger, punchier bass, especially when you enable one of two bass boost modes: Punchy or Deep. I’m not sure the speaker sounds better overall, especially indoors (the Boombox 3 seems a bit more balanced and I prefer its treble performance). But the more aggressive-sounding Boombox 4 is better suited to hosting an outdoor party, whether poolside, on the patio, or in a stadium parking lot for tailgating.

Note that you get a bit more power (up to 210W) and volume when the speaker is plugged in, but the drop isn’t that big when using battery power alone (200 watts). This is a key difference between the Boombox 4 and the Boombox 3, as the Boombox 3 plays at around 50% of its power compared to the Boombox 4 when not plugged in (the difference isn’t that big when they are both plugged in, as the Boombox 3 has a maximum power of 180 watts).

Like its predecessor, the Boombox 4 has a USB output port that lets you charge external devices, like your phone. While there’s no analog audio input if you want to go wired, you can plug in a USB-C cable for wired listening as the speaker supports USB-C audio.

Benefits

  • Improved design with integrated handles
  • Can be placed vertically or placed horizontally
  • Improved clarity with powerful bass
  • Fully waterproof
  • Integrated lighting

Disadvantages

  • Charges with a cord, not USB-C

The Sony ULT Field 7 is the successor to Sony’s SRS-SG500 Bluetooth boom box, which I liked but lacked clarity compared to some of its competitors, including JBL’s boom box speakers. This new model not only sounds better but also offers an improved design with integrated handles on each side of the speaker, LED lighting and a new karaoke function (microphone not included). You can place the speaker vertically or lay it horizontally. The sound changes a bit with speaker orientation, but overall clarity and treble performance improved, and I thought the bass had better definition.

Weighing 13.9 pounds (6.3 kilograms), the speaker packs a punch, especially when you engage the ULT button, which has two low-frequency settings (there’s also a seven-band EQ) that both boost the sound — and the bass in particular — making the speaker sound fuller (I always had the ULT button engaged). Battery life is rated for up to 30 hours at moderate volume levels, and the speaker is IP67 waterproof, dust and rust resistant. A charging port on the back lets you charge external devices like your smartphone.

Benefits

  • Improved design over the original, less boxy and less generic with an IP67 rating (dust and waterproof)
  • More powerful sound than the original with two upgraded 45-watt midrange drivers, an 80-watt subwoofer and two 15-watt tweeters
  • Strong, powerful bass with Bass Boost mode
  • Strong battery life (up to 30 pounds) that can be charged with an included USB-C cable or two-prong power cord
  • Customizable integrated light show
  • Two karaoke microphone inputs (mics sold separately) and output port

Disadvantages

  • Still a bit generic
  • Battery life is limited when volume is high

In 2024, Tribit launched a second-generation version of its popular Stormbox Blast Bluetooth boom box speaker. The Stormbox Blast 2 features an improved design – it’s less boxy and generic than the original – as well as upgraded speakers and two wired microphone inputs, ideal for karaoke (microphones are sold separately). The speaker is quite beefy, weighing 15.8 pounds, and is rated at 200 watts, with an 80-watt subwoofer, two 45-watt midrange drivers, and two 15-watt tweeters.

This thing plays loud, has powerful bass (I mostly kept the bass boost mode on), and compares well to high-end Bluetooth speakers from JBL and Sony that cost about twice as much. Like the original, it also features a lighting component – it’s customizable or can be turned off – and the speaker is fully waterproof with an IP67 rating. While the Stormbox Bast 2 is rated for an impressive 30 hours of battery life at moderate volume levels and with a light show, battery life drops significantly when you really turn up the volume. Also worth noting: there is a charging port and, interestingly, the speaker can be charged with a USB-C cable or the included two-prong power cord.

Benefits

  • Excellent sound for a relatively compact speaker (less than 5 pounds)
  • Three transducers, two passive radiators and impressive digital processing for exceptional sound
  • Premium design with silicone-coated, powder-coated steel body and replaceable rope handle
  • Fully waterproof, dustproof and shockproof (IP67 rating)
  • Up to 20 hours of battery life with included 15-watt power adapter
  • USB-C port for lossless wired listening also charges

Disadvantages

  • Dear
  • No speaker capability
  • Silicone finish attracts some dust and lint

When I first heard about the SoundLink Max, I was a little surprised that Bose would offer a $399 Bluetooth speaker after the $149 SoundLink Flex speaker worked so well. The Flex has been so successful because not only does it sound great for its compact size, but it doesn’t cost that much – at least not for a Bose product. Unsurprisingly, the 4.89-pound Max also looks impressive—it’s perhaps the best sounding for its size—and has a premium design with a replaceable, built-in rope handle (the Max is fully waterproof and dustproof). It’s a great Bluetooth speaker, but its high price may put some people off.

Benefits

  • Powerful sound
  • Integrated lighting
  • Integrated handle
  • Charging and microphone output ports

Disadvantages

  • Battery life could be better

The JBL Partybox Encore Essential is the company’s smallest PartyBox speaker to date, but it still packs some weight, weighing in at 13 pounds (5.9 kg). It’s an 11.54 x 10.87 x 12.87-inch cube with a ring of light on the speaker that pulses and syncs to the beat of your music as it changes color. The Essential is IPX4 splash resistant and has a built-in handle for easy carrying.

Rated for 100 watts (we always take wattages with a grain of salt), the speaker doesn’t quite have the volume or sound quality of the PartyBox 110 (see below). It has a 5.25-inch woofer and two 1.75-inch tweeters and packs a lot of punch, plus it’s easier to transport. In this sense, it offers a nice balance between size and power.

Battery life is rated at 6 hours at moderate volume levels, and this speaker charges with an included AC adapter. It also has a charging port on the back, as well as a microphone port if you want to speak or sing in front of a crowd (microphone not included).

To be clear, this is a mono speaker designed to put out a lot of sound (there’s a bass boost mode) from a reasonably sized design. You can wirelessly pair two of these speakers and get significantly better sound (in stereo). It would be a bit expensive.

Benefits

  • Powerful, powerful sound
  • Guitar and microphone inputs
  • Integrated light show
  • IPX4 splash-proof
  • Replaceable battery
  • Connect multiple JBL Auracast compatible speakers

The successor to JBL’s popular PartyBox 110, the Club 120 packs a punch and delivers more powerful sound than many portable boombox speakers, including JBL’s own Boombox 3. The speaker has been slightly redesigned from its predecessor and now features a replaceable battery (you can swap out a second battery to extend battery life, but only one battery is included) and Bluetooth 5.4 with Auracast.

There’s a built-in folding handle for carrying the speaker, but the Club 120 is quite heavy, weighing 24.4 pounds (1 pound more than the PartyBox 110) and measuring just over 22 inches tall. You can place this Bluetooth boombox vertically, as shown in the image above, or place it horizontally, as it has rubber feet on both sides of the speaker.

It offers up to 12 hours of playback at moderate volume levels and features a light show that syncs to the beat me of your music (you can customize the light show from the speaker itself or use the JBL PartyBox companion app). The speaker has a Bluetooth or wired USB connection, and there are guitar and mic inputs. It’s also worth noting that the speaker is IPX4 splash-proof, and you can wirelessly link multiple JBL Auracast-enabled speakers together for even more powerful sound.

JBL Boombox 3: Although JBL has launched the new Boombox 4 for 2025, its third-generation Boombox 3 is still a great boom box and can cost around $100 less, making it arguably the best value. It doesn’t play as loud or produce as much bass as the Boombox 4, and it has a lower power rating, especially when working on battery power (it plays louder when you plug it in). But it produces a more balanced sound that isn’t as harsh as the Boombox 4, which some people might prefer.

Anker Soundcore Movement X600: Anker’s Soundcore Motion It looks impressive for its relatively compact size and represents good value for money. Weighing 4.2 pounds (1.9 kg), it’s a little heavy, but it’s light enough to carry around without feeling like you’re exercising. It’s equipped with five speakers, including two woofers, two tweeters, and an upward-firing full-range driver “in a single driver array that, combined with Soundcore’s audio algorithm and DSP, helps create a wide (and tall) soundstage for listening to any type of music,” according to Anker.

JBL Partybox 110: The predecessor to JBL’s Partybox Club 120, the PartyBox 110 isn’t much of a step back and tends to cost $50 less than the Club 120. Like the Club 120, it packs a punch (both speakers sound similar, but the Club 120 has a replaceable battery and Bluetooth 5.4 with Auracast instead of Bluetooth 5.1), and there’s a built-in handle for carrying the speaker. The PartyBox 110 is quite heavy, weighing 23 pounds and measuring just over 22 inches tall.

Tribit Stormbox Explosion: Tribit is known for its affordable, smaller Bluetooth speakers that offer very good sound quality and features for the price. Its new Stormbox Blast speaker is its first Bluetooth boom box speaker, and it delivers generally impressive sound for its size and also has a built-in light show and USB charging. With the newer and more powerful Stormbox Blast 2 available, the price of this model often drops to less than $150.

Ultimate Ears Hyperboom: The Hyberboom has been available for about 5 years and remains a giant Bluetooth speaker with great sound. I compared it to the old JBL Boombox 2. For outdoor use, I gave a nod to JBL’s design. Both speakers weigh around 13 to 14 pounds, but the JBL feels a little more natural to carry around. It has the handle and the tubular design – it looks like it belongs outside. The Hyperboom has a thick rubber strap, and it feels like you’re carrying a big jug containing something really solid. It’s boxy and understated, and it seems a little more at home inside. Although I preferred the JBL design, the Hyperboom is overall the best-sounding portable Bluetooth speaker. It has a wider soundstage with a bit more bass and clarity. It also looks a little more natural. I also like that it has both an auxiliary input and an optical input to accompany a USB output port for charging devices.

Anker Rave Party 2 soundtrack: Although it costs more than Tribit’s Stormbox Blast, the 11.7-pound Rave Party 2 is a more attractively designed speaker and arguably sounds slightly better. Its two 4-inch woofers and two 2-inch tweeters deliver aggressive, punchy sound with enough volume to fill larger rooms (the Tribit’s bass goes a little deeper but I was quite happy with this speaker’s low-end capabilities). For even bigger sound, you can wirelessly link multiple Rave Party 2 speakers and other Soundcore speakers that support the company’s PartyCast 2.0 feature.

Soundcore by Anker Motion Boom Plus: Despite being a few years old, the Motion Boom Plus is still on sale at a pretty good value, although the Boom 2 Plus is superior and doesn’t cost much more. Weighing 5.29 pounds (almost a pound more than the Motion Boom – see below), it uses Bluetooth 5.3 and is equipped with two upgraded 3.5-inch woofers and two 1-inch tweeters, delivering up to 80 watts of audio output (60 watts for the woofers and 20W for the tweeters). Battery life is estimated at 20 hours at moderate volume levels. It’s also IP67 waterproof and dustproof and floats if you drop it in a body of water.

Sondcore by Anker Motion Boom: Anker’s more expensive Soundcore Motion Boom Plus (see above) is a substantial sonic improvement over the original Motion Boom, but this model is still a very good mini boom box for the price. Equipped with a handle and weighing just over 4 pounds, the speaker reminds me of one of those giant flashlights or “floating lanterns” that were in vogue about 30 years ago. For the record, the Motion Boom actually floats and is fully waterproof with an IPX7 rating.

Sony SRS-XG500: The SRS-XG500 is the predecessor to Sony’s new ULT Field 7 and was designed to compete with the JBL Boombox 2 (and more recently the Boombox 3). They are similar in price and size, with both having a built-in handle. The Sony is a bit larger but weighs slightly less at 12.34 pounds (5.6 kg). I went back and forth comparing the sound of the two speakers. I liked the sound of the JBL a bit more as it seemed a bit clearer with better detail, but the Sony produced plenty of bass. It offers a warmer, more powerful sound quality that some people might prefer. The ULT Field 7 seems superior.

Budget

First of all, you need to determine how much you are willing to spend on a new Bluetooth speaker. Good value wireless speakers continue to get better, so you can find good “cheap” Bluetooth speakers from Chinese brands like Tribit for not too much money (less than $60). If you’re looking for a high-end speaker, you can expect to pay $100 or more, especially for larger portable speakers that deliver better sound.

Size

Larger speakers tend to produce better sound, delivering more powerful sound with more bass. The bigger they are, the more they weigh, which can make them a little more difficult to transport. So you need to balance size and performance if you’re looking for something easily portable. If you’re interested in a larger portable speaker, one feature to look out for is a built-in handle.

Sustainability

Many Bluetooth speakers are now fully waterproof and some are completely dustproof. If you plan to take the speaker with you to the beach or on a hike, having a more durable speaker is a desirable asset.

Speaker Capabilities

Some speakers have a built-in microphone that turns them into a speakerphone when you make calls on your cell phone. Many speakers don’t offer this feature, so choose accordingly if this is something you’re looking for.

When evaluating which are the best Bluetooth speakers, we consider speaker design and durability, as well as sound quality, battery life, additional features (such as additional connectivity options), and overall value. We test speakers in real-world environments, both indoors and outdoors, and compare them to other speakers in the same price range.

The list includes everything from compact mini models and pocket mic versions to heavier models with powerful sound. To learn more, check out our lists of the best smart speakers and the best Wi-Fi speakers and music systems.

How to choose a wireless Bluetooth boombox?

When choosing a Bluetooth boombox, it depends on the size and price. If you’re looking for a very portable boombox, you’ll want to get something very compact, but remember that smaller speakers generally produce less sound and bass than larger ones. There are many mini Bluetooth speakers that deliver louder sound than you might expect, but they have their sonic limitations. For many people, it’s a matter of finding a boombox that’s not too big or too small, one that travels well but is also capable of producing good sound for its size. Finding the best wireless Bluetooth boombox also depends on your budget.

Price can be a limiting factor. You may not want to spend $300 or more on a boombox. Fortunately, there are many good options in the $200 range, and some decent wireless Bluetooth boomboxes can cost less than $100. Additionally, some “value” brands that sell primarily on Amazon are definitely worth considering because they offer great value for money.

How do I connect a Bluetooth boombox wirelessly to my TV?

Well, first of all, you need a TV, video streaming device, or cable or satellite box that has Bluetooth. You connect a Bluetooth boombox just like you do Bluetooth headphones: through the Bluetooth settings menu on your TV or the aforementioned devices (the Apple TV, for example, has Bluetooth connectivity, making it easy to connect your AirPods).

The only problem with connecting a Bluetooth boombox to your TV is that there may be audio-video sync issues due to Bluetooth lag. In some cases, when your Bluetooth boombox has an audio input (some high-end Bluetooth boomboxes even have digital audio inputs), you can use a wired connection to the speaker through your TV’s audio outputs.

Soundbars tend to use your TV’s optical or HDMI connection to get sound. Many soundbars have a Bluetooth option that allows you to wirelessly stream music from your phone to the soundbar.

Can Bluetooth boomboxes connect to multiple devices at once?

If you want to increase the volume of your box, many brands have developed interconnection technology that allows the user to connect multiple speakers and boomboxes together. JBL, for example, offers Connect+ and PartyBoost technologies that can wirelessly link different JBL products to amplify your sound. Similar technology, Bose’s SimpleSync, allows listeners to connect two Bose speakers at once. Consider these technologies if you hope to improve your sound.

If you’re hoping for your boombox to remember multiple devices, many wireless Bluetooth boomboxes use what’s called “multi-pair” or “multi-point” technology. This feature allows you to easily switch between connected devices, m But the exact number that can be connected at one time varies by model. If this is a feature you’re looking for, be sure to check out “multipoint” technology in the boombox specifications.
