KwaZulu-Natal is one of South AfricaThe island’s most underrated and overlooked destinations, especially given its wide range of highlights, all within easy driving distance of each other. In just 10-14 days, you can combine world-class hiking, rich and diverse culture, delicious local cuisine (think Durban curries and rabbits), dramatic and moving history and, of course, incredible scenery and wildlife. Not to mention that this stretch of coastline offers the best swimming and surfing conditions in South Africa thanks to its warm Indian Ocean currents and miles and miles of golden sandy beaches…

From the rugged peaks of the Drakensberg to the breathtaking coastline, the province offers striking landscapes and a wide range of activities for all types of travelers, from honeymooners to multi-generational families. From adventurers to flies and floppers…

Its cultural heritage is just as fascinating, with opportunities to explore Zulu traditions, historic battlefields (ever seen the movie Zulu?) where many visitors are reduced to tears by the moving tales. Add to that superb game sightings at reserves such as Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, Tembe Elephant Park and iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and you’ll quickly see why KwaZulu-Natal is such a versatile, year-round destination that combines adventure, culture and natural beauty in one unforgettable region. In summary, KZN really has it all! Here are some of my favorite places from my latest trip…

Montusi Mountain Lodge Montusi Mountain Lodge is a peaceful, family-run retreat located in the Northern Drakensberg Nature Reserve, offering stunning views of the iconic Amphitheater. Montusi is known and loved for its beautiful family accommodation, with individual chalets spread out, each in its own private garden for complete privacy and tranquility.

It is beautifully located and offers a range of activities such as guided hikes to Montusi Peak (usually with a friendly dog in tow), Northern horse riding, mountain biking, trail running, fishing, bird watching and photography. There are also tennis courts, a spa and a children’s play area.

I particularly enjoyed the hike to Bushman’s Cave, where I spotted elk and birds along the way, followed by a loop around the dam. The food was delicious and the pool looked very inviting!

Run by super sisters Lindsey and Cath, Montusi is part of The Carte Collection, it also pairs beautifully with sister property The Cavern, run by their Carte cousin duo Megan and Lesley, where I headed next…

The Cavern Drakensberg Resort & Spa The Cavern is a popular family resort in the North Drakensberg, nestled in a lush valley, surrounded by the most beautiful gardens teeming with bird life and surrounded by the magnificent Berg Mountains.

Celebrating 85 years of “Many Happy Returns” this year, this gem is known for its family-friendly yet relaxed atmosphere and wide range of accommodation options, all beautifully decorated. Rest assured they have the perfect room for everyone, whether honeymooners, backpackers, solo travelers, groups of friends or multi-generational families.

The Cavern has a fabulous Forest Retreat Spa where I had two of the best massages and facials ever, a very warm and friendly Cave Bar, mini cinema, games room and a variety of lounges and terraces to relax and enjoy the views.

Outside, there is a lovely swimming pool and a range of activities to choose from such as guided hikes, horse riding, trout fishing and the All-Out Adventure center nearby, making it a popular choice for guests seeking both nature and comfort.

I particularly enjoyed our morning bird walk through the gardens organized by ornithology expert David Weaver. I was lucky enough to plan my visit perfectly and add a number of new birds to my list on my second walk with him! We also enjoyed a lovely walk to Sungubala to see the Silent Lady rock carving itself by the river.

The Cave is the kind of place you never want to leave – and keeps coming back. I’ve only just returned and I’m already dreaming of my next Cavern Coffee, the daily 11 o’clock tea on the lawn, delicious meals in the dining room – and good family time with my boys. Roll on September!

The Elangeni Durban Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani is an iconic beachfront hotel on Durban’s Golden Mile, offering stunning views of the Indian Ocean and direct access to the promenade.

With its wide choice of rooms, multiple restaurants, swimming pools and conference rooms, it caters to both leisure and business travelers, while its central location puts attractions like uShaka Marine World and the Durban ICC within easy reach. The hotel combines classic coastal comfort with a lively town and beach atmosphere, making it a popular base for visitors wanting both comfort and easy access to Durban’s main sights. The sunrises are definitely worth getting up early for!

Everything you need to plan your trip in 2026 Ghost Mountain Inn After a brief stay in Durban, it’s time for the safari! The journey to Tembe Elephant Park takes approximately 5-6 hours, so a lunch break en route is highly recommended. One of my favorite places, which I have been visiting for over two decades now, is the Ghost Mountain Inn in Mkuze. This is a short detour on the N2 just before crossing the Lebombo mountains.

Situated at the foot of the legendary Tshaneni ‘Ghost’ Mountain in Zululand (legendary for its ghostly stories), it offers a charming blend of comfort, heritage and natural beauty. It’s a quiet and very affordable base for exploring this region, from its wildlife-rich reserves to picturesque Lake Jozini.

The family-owned property offers beautifully appointed suites overlooking lush native gardens filled with birdsong and a relaxed atmosphere that invites you to relax and unwind. There are two beautiful swimming pools, a spa as well as a pier over a lake and a bird hide on the property. A wide range of activities are also offered, including guided walks, bird watching, meaningful, non-touristy Zulu cultural excursions, sunset safari cruises as well as tiger fishing on Lake Jozini, as well as guided safaris to spot the Big Five at Umkhuze, Hluhluwe and Manyoni.

With its warm hospitality and picturesque setting, Ghost Mountain Inn is a great place to linger longer – or, in our case, a fabulous spot for a delicious lunch and a comforting stopover, during a getaway to one of South Africa’s less explored regions… Maputaland, and our next stop the Elephant Coast.

Tembe Elephant Park Tembe Elephant Park, located in northern KwaZulu-Natal near the Mozambique border, is one of South Africa’s most unique and rewarding safari destinations. Renowned for its population of some of Africa’s largest tusked elephants, the park is also a hotspot for diversity with a mix of rare sand forests, dense forests and wetlands, and is also home to all of the Big 5. Tembe offers an intimate, low-impact safari experience with limited numbers of visitors (4×4 only) and guided game drives led by knowledgeable local rangers.

On our recent adventures with guide Sakhile, we barely saw another vehicle in 3 days! What we saw were beautiful ellies with beautiful tusks strolling leisurely through the sand forest – and a lion taking out a Nyala right in front of us and then calling its cubs to come and lie down! Our aperitifs at the Muzi marsh were a real highlight.

As well as its famous elephants, the park is home to a diverse range of wildlife including lions, leopards, black and white rhinoceroses and over 340 species of birds (including the green twin-spotted, Woodward’s batis, eastern nicator, Neergaard’s sunbird, Rudd’s apalis and pink-throated twin-spotted), making it particularly attractive to wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers. enthusiasts looking for a more off-the-beaten-track safari.

Tembe is owned and partly managed by the local Tembe tribe and community and is a true wilderness experience at incredible value. There’s nothing like listening to the sounds of the bush from your tent at night – or spending hours in Mahlasela’s elephant hideout…

Tembe holds such a special place in my heart, almost 30 years after my first visit.

Biyela Lodge at mFulaWozi Wilderness Biyela Lodge, located in the community-owned Mfulawozi Wilderness on the unfenced southern edge of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, offers an exclusive and intimate safari experience with stunning views of the White iMfolozi River, where you can regularly spot wildlife including large herds of elephants.

Designed to blend seamlessly into its natural surroundings, this contemporary-style lodge comprises just twelve self-contained suites, each with its own private terrace. Mine had a beautiful infinity pool – with an equally stunning view from its bathtub!

The reserve itself is part of a successful rewilding initiative, where community-led conservation and low-impact tourism go hand in hand, and guests can enjoy guided safaris, bushwalks and exceptional birding in a Big 5 environment. On the other side of the river (I love crossing the river at full throttle!) you also have Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park to explore.

With a focus on privacy, sustainability and authentic immersion in nature, Biyela Lodge is a must-see. I loved the food which was excellent throughout our stay with a good dose of wow factor, but the real highlight was spotting a leopard right behind the lodge – two evenings in a row.

This caused such excitement at the lodge that rangers gave up their free time and came out of their showers to come see the sighting for themselves! We also saw two lions chasing each other – and being chased back by a wild dog! Jason, our guide, was a bit of a cat whisperer, I think!

Villa on Sala Beach Our final stop on our KZN adventure was Sala Beach House, located in the coastal town of Shaka’s Rock on the Dolphin Coast. This intimate boutique hideaway has won numerous awards and is the first hotel on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast to receive 5 Star Premium status from TGCSA and is also Fair Trade certified.

Overlooking the Indian Ocean, this elegant property combines contemporary design and warm hospitality, with elegantly appointed rooms, lush gardens and a tranquil infinity pool that leads directly to the beach.

We stayed in his lavish 3-bedroom villa, starting our idyllic morning with yoga on the terrace a a sunrise, followed by a hearty breakfast, a decadent massage at the spa and a long walk along the beach before heading to the nearby King Shaka Airport. What a way to end an epic adventure.

Why KZN has it all Last year, South Africa reportedly welcomed more than 10 million visitors, an increase of more than 17% year-on-year, with KwaZulu-Natal seen as one of the key growth drivers. Durban’s beaches recorded almost 7 million visitors over the festive period (December to mid-January), confirming the scale of its national popularity.

In fact, KwaZulu-Natal is South Africa’s number one domestic tourist destination and the second most popular province with international visitors after Cape Town. Tourism in the province would also represent more than 14,000 jobs.

There are so many reasons why I love KwaZulu-Natal – but at the heart of it all, this is where I feel like you can really experience an authentic, culturally rich taste of the real Africa!
