We are engaged in a battle in this world – a spiritual battle. We might not see it, we might forget it’s there. But the enemy would love nothing more than to fill our minds with discouragement and defeat. If you are a believer who lives as salt and light in a dark world, you will not go long without encountering spiritual warfare through the obstacles and attacks it will throw in your direction. And while we can’t stop his cruel attacks, we don’t have to let him win. God reminds us in His word to remain aware of Satan’s plans, to live vigilantly in this world, and to stay close to Him.
God gives specific instructions in His Word, He gives us everything we need to stand strong in this life and achieve victory on the battlefields of our mind, heart, and soul. Yet too often we run through busy days, ill-equipped, unprepared, or simply unaware of what we are up against, or who the real enemy is.
The forces of darkness do not wait until we are ready for their attack. They are ruthless, determined and cunning. The devil doesn’t care if we “feel” prepared or prayed for our day. In fact, he’d rather we weren’t.
But in a broken and dark world, how can we truly know if we are facing the expected difficulties of life versus the real spiritual warfare attacks of the enemy? Jesus himself told us that in this life we would experience problems (John 16:33), we know this to be true. And while we often don’t know exactly who or what is behind the struggles, we can rest assured that God is equipping us for battle and calling us to live on alert.
Spiritual warfare is not about paying more attention to the devil or not focusing too much on his evil ways. Biblical warfare is about making us more attentive to what God is doing and reminding us to stand firm and let Him fight our fiercest battles. There is power through His Spirit, His Word and in prayer, and we can be sure that He is always with us, leading our way and covering us behind.
THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO FIGHT SPIRITUAL BATTLES IN OUR LIVES AND IN THE WORLD TODAY, BUT HERE ARE 5 SCRIPTURE EXAMPLES THAT CAN REVEAL YOU ARE UNDER SPIRITUAL WARFARE ATTACK:

1. Sudden or extreme onslaught of various troubles, losses and trials
This is a merciless attack that Satan often launches against believers. It seems to come out of nowhere, and it’s just one thing after another. It’s even difficult to see clearly, you feel like your life is suddenly spinning out of control. The life of Job is for us an example of what this can be (Work 1-2). The devil came to God asking if he could torment Job, thinking that he would try to draw him away from the Lord through the many struggles he faced. As we know from the book of Job, this righteous man remained strong. Even though he seemed to lose everything he held dear, he knew that God protected him despite all the losses and difficulties around him. God will never allow the enemy to have total control, he does not have the final say over our lives. We may face battles and attacks in this world, but we can trust our Almighty God to protect us through it all.

2. Attacks of physical danger, illness, life-threatening loss
We know from God’s word that the enemy wants nothing more than “steal, kill and destroy“our lives and everything we love (John 10:10). He is a thief, a roaring lion, preying on God’s people and attacking us in battles we do not see coming. He desires to silence our voices and take us out of this world to extinguish the light of God’s love and hope through Christ. Many of us may have had near-death experiences, experienced a sudden and terrible illness, or held loved ones who were on the brink of heaven. And yet, God intervened to keep us here longer. There are many stories in the Bible about God’s people being subjected to great physical attacks and great dangers, and so many miracles that God performed to bring them out safely. Even if it didn’t make any sense. Even though it seemed like the end.
Daniel faced the lions in the lion’s den (Daniel 6). His attackers thought he would be gone by morning, but God intervened and shut each lion’s mouth. Rest assured that God still shuts His mouth today. If you are facing attacks and feel your life is threatened, our God is a miracle worker. The Bible reminds us that our times are in His hands. We can trust that He knows that each day we will be here on earth, and that He will keep us and our loved ones safe in His care until He calls us home to heaven. There is no reason to be afraid, stay strong through prayer and His word and you will overcome this spiritual battle.

3. Increased temptation and lure toward sin or bad choices
Although we live daily with struggles and temptations all around us, often spiritual attacks occur in our lives that put us at greater risk of going astray. This is a merciless battle, and the enemy will fight hard against us. Satan desires to bring down not only us through spiritual warfare, but everyone around us. He loves seeing headline stories about fallen believers who have made terrible sinful choices. He loves disunity among Christians and wants nothing more than to break up families and all the relationships we hold dear. We must stay strong and stay aware. Don’t give him a foothold in your life, don’t give him even an inch of space. He will come to wreak havoc and try to lead us astray faster than we know what happened.
Often, when we feel tired, already weakened, we are on his radar. Jesus himself is our greatest example when he faced the temptation of the devil in the desert (Matthew 4:1-11). He was fasting, he was hungry, he was physically weakened and tired, and of course the enemy took advantage of this moment to stir up temptations to a greater degree than ever before. A single mistake is all he was looking for. A wrong move. A “yes” to sin. But Jesus remained strong and resisted each of his attacks. He spoke God’s word out loud, held fast to the truth, and ignored Satan’s lies and vicious attacks. And He leads us to the same thing today. Do not be caught off guard by tempering attacks in spiritual warfare. When you begin to feel strong departures from the truth and the ways of God, you can know who is at the bottom of it all.

4. Feelings of overwhelming hopelessness, darkness, and fear
Many may suffer from anxiety and fear in this life. Many may be dealing with depression, mood disorders, or mental illness. But often the attacks of spiritual forces on our lives increase the intensity even more than normal daily struggles. It’s unforgiving and relentless, we feel alone and completely overwhelmed and stuck in deep fear and despair. Recognize this darkness for what it is and stand firm!
This is where Satan will cause some to even consider suicide or make choices they never thought they would make. It’s a cruel trap, but there is hope in the pit through Christ. He is the One who can bring us out of this darkness, He is the One who can calm our fears and give us strength that we didn’t even know was possible.
Elijah the prophet was a great man of God. He had fought the battle against false idols and resisted those who opposed God. In everyone’s eyes, he was a hero, respected and honored. And yet, right after such victory and success, he faced extreme war. He ran for his life, scared. Despair and darkness took over his life, and he could not even think clearly, it seemed that he had forgotten everything that God had just done in the name of his people (1 Kings 19). But here’s what I love about God: He came to him right where he was. He provided for his needs. He took care of himself. He strengthened him. He gave him great mercy and grace. And then He did this: He called him to action. He gave her a plan to keep moving forward. He still had great purposes for the prophet in the days to come; there was still work to be done. And he does the same for us today too. If you feel scared or hopeless, stop long enough to think about who you are really running from. Do not accept Satan’s pursuit and attacks. It has no lasting power over you and God will support you strongly for the journey that remains to be taken.

5. Deep confusion, feelings of condemnation and guilt, dulled spiritual awareness
This last sign of spiritual warfare can sometimes be difficult to see. Because this attack can be so subtle and happen slowly over time. But when we stop and look closely, we can describe it for what it is. A slow, steady move away from God’s truth will leave us confused, angry, conflicted, and dealing with pervasive feelings of guilt and condemnation that we just can’t seem to shake. We have lost our desire to hurry and pray. Or we are too busy, we have too many things to do, even good things. We are not in the word of God. We are no longer in fellowship with believers and somehow believe the lie that we can live this life on our own. And yet we feel a dark cloud of confusion and guilt that follows us everywhere and doesn’t go away. Bitterness can set in. Conflicts and broken relationships that once held us together. We don’t even know what to believe anymore and have started listening more to what the world says is right.
Get out of this trap now, wake up! Take action and know that the power of God is greater to break this trap of condemnation and confusion. God reminds us in His Word that He is “not the author of confusion but of peace» (1 Corinthians 14:33). He tells us that “there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus» (Romans 8:1).
His Spirit will bring conviction of sin to his children, he will draw us to himself and show us what we we have to repair. But there is much hope and grace in that. It is not a callous, condemning voice. It is not the lies and accumulation of guilt that the enemy will attempt to wreak havoc on us. Depart from this dark cloud and enter into the light and truth of God.

God’s Battle Plan for Us in the Face of Spiritual Warfare
God arms us with the sword, the Word of God, to resist the lies of the enemy. He gives us strength, wisdom and discernment through His own Spirit to stand strong in the real battle of spiritual warfare. He invites us to spend time in his presence, through prayer and worship, striving to know him better.
As we know more and more of God’s Truth, understanding what is real, we also learn more of what is false. We are able to quickly discern when something is wrong. We are stronger to oppose it in the mighty name of Jesus. He never leaves us to fend for ourselves in a dark world, but reminds us that He is constantly with us, fighting for us, even when we cannot see.
HERE ARE 7 THINGS GOD OFFERS US TO STAND FIRM AGAINST SPIRITUAL WARFARE ATTACKS:

1. The gift of the Holy Spirit
God fills us with strength, wisdom and discernment through his own Spirit to stay strong in battle. He never leaves us to fend for ourselves and fight in our own strength. We need His new fullness every day, we need the power that only He can provide. Every believer has the gift of the Spirit of God dwelling within them. The same power that raised Lazarus from the dead, parted the sea, opened the prison. our gates, and who made the lame to walk, is the same mighty Spirit who is still alive and at work in us today, enabling us to stand firm in the presence of spiritual warfare.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. » (Acts 1:8).
“The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26).

2. Armor of God
God reminds us not to begin the day without being prepared and equipped for battle. He tells us to take on all his armor in order to resist the plans of the enemy. Each part has a specific purpose and is designed for our protection and covering. Just as a soldier would not go into battle unprepared, we should also be fully prepared for the attacks we will face through the armor of God in spiritual warfare.
“Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with the truth and having having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace, besides all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one, and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (.Ephesians 6:11-17).

3. Prayer
God invites us into a relationship with Him, He desires us to spend time in His presence, striving to know Him more. He constantly reminds us in his word of the importance of prayer and the power found in it. He tells us to pray constantly. And even when we don’t know what to say, He tells us that the Spirit is interceding for us. He never leaves us to fend for ourselves in a dark world, but reminds us that He is constantly with us, fighting for us, even when we cannot see. Whether you are in a season of rest or a season of spiritual warfare, prayer is one of our greatest weapons.
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be vigilant and always continue to pray for all the saints.” (Ephesians 6:18).
“…The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish many things. » (James 5:16).
A prayer to guard against spiritual warfare attacks
We know that the enemy would not fight so hard against us if we did not make a difference to your kingdom. He wouldn’t be trying so hard to stop us if he didn’t think you still had so much good in store. Remind us today, Lord, that the battle is Yours and that everything we face can be defeated with a single blow by Your mighty hand. Please help us to trust you more, to stop wasting time spinning our wheels or struggling with our strengths. Forgive us for the times we neglected to set our eyes and our hearts on you, for the days we forgot to come to you first. Fill us with the power of your Holy Spirit. Fill us with your wisdom and discernment to make us aware of the traps of the enemy, so that we can resist his plans with strength. Thank you for your constant reminders that your presence will see us through no matter what we face, and that you will give us rest. Amen- Debbie McDaniel

4. His Word
God arms us with the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, to resist the lies of the enemy. Returning God’s words to Him in prayer is a powerful weapon against the forces of evil in spiritual warfare. It is the Truth that extends into enemy territory. It reminds us that God knows our path and understands what we face today. This strengthens our faith and trust in God. This guards our hearts and focuses our minds on Him.
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. » (Hebrews 4:12).
“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

5. The power of praise
Praise invites the presence of God. He remains near us when we praise him. And praise is also a powerful weapon. This scares the enemy away from the fight. It repels the darkness that surrounds us, and blocks the attacks and hisses that weigh us down. Evil will not persist if we praise our God, who will fight our battles for us. In the story of Jehoshaphat, we see God miraculously defeating the enemy, through the obedience of the people in praising Him.
“As they began to sing and praise, the LORD ambushed the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated. » (2 Chronicles 20:22).
“He dwells in the praises of his people. » (Psalm 22:3).

6. Obedience to Christ
Our willingness to obey the words and commands of Christ in a world that demands we go our own way is immense. He sets a powerful example that we are willing to die to our own desires and live for the glory of God. But it will never happen naturally. Our very flesh, our own desires, and our sinful nature will fight against this every step of the way. It is a daily choice that says we will pay attention to every thought, that we will take up our cross daily and follow Christ’s ways, not our own.
Submit to God’s authority. Be merciless with sin, which is an open door for the enemy to wreak havoc in our lives through spiritual warfare. Resist him and he will have to flee.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7).
“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).

7. The blood of Christ and the word of our testimony
We are victorious in this life because He has overcome. And our lives are hid in Christ with God. No enemy or obstacle can touch our souls. When we have been set free by the blood of Christ and the power of his sacrifice through death on the cross, we have a new identity in him. We have been bought with a price, not our own, but covered by the grace and forgiveness of Jesus. We live victorious against the attacks of spiritual warfare, and no demon or darkness can ever separate us from the love of God that is in Christ our Lord. There is power in the name of Jesus.
“And they overcame him for the blood of the Lamb, and for the word of their testimony, and loved not their life, even in the face of death.” (Revelation 12:11).
“For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. » (1 Corinthians 1:18).
When we belong to Christ, the enemy never has the final say in our lives. We are safe in God’s hands.
Carry on – courageously and freely – never held back by fear or defeat. The battle belongs to the Lord, and it is He who wins the final victory!
