I’ve sent clients to many Caribbean islands over the years, and St. Barts still throws me off a little each time. It’s tiny. You can practically see from the top of a hill. And yet it manages to be two completely different places at once: a barefoot, salty Caribbean with hillside goats on one side, and total glamor on the other, with nothing awkward in the fusion.
In fact, you mostly notice it from a yacht. Stop at a bay in the morning and you might have it all to yourself, just pelicans and clear water. In the evening, you are in Gustavia, tenders going back and forth between yachts more than a hundred meters away, restaurant terraces filled with people who, obviously, have not taken a plane during a quiet week. Few places manage to create both atmospheres without one canceling out the other. This is a big part of why, of all the Caribbean charters we’ve done, St. Barths is the one people ask us about.
Why St. Barthélemy works so well as a superyacht destination The island covers approximately 25 square kilometers and is somehow integrated into more than a dozen distinct bays and beaches, each with its own personality. For a rental, this is a real benefit, honestly more than people expect before experiencing it. You can have lunch in a busy anchorage and find yourself twenty minutes later in a completely deserted place, without the long transits that large islands usually require.
Water is one of them. There are no rivers in St. Barts, almost no runoff, so the sea remains remarkably clear all year round. Good for paddleboarding, good for snorkeling, good for just jumping off the swim platform between stops.
And then there’s the culture, which honestly seems more French than Caribbean in places. Gustavia’s waterfront looks like it was lifted straight out of the south of France, boutiques and bistros, and then dropped onto a Caribbean hillside. This mix, between French varnish and island simplicity, gives the place its own rhythm. On the same day, you can spend the morning in a swimsuit on a deserted beach and the evening in the best outfit you packed.
Anchorages and experiences worth building an itinerary around Gustavia is the starting point for most itineraries, and for good reason. The marina puts you close to some of the best restaurants in the Caribbean, and the harbor itself is worth an evening just for the scenery.
It is about Colombier that the guests speak next. No road access, only a steep path or boat, which allows you to stay peaceful even in high season. Wild goats roam the hillside above the anchorage. A world away from Gustavia, even though it is only a few kilometers from the coast.
Shell Beach is an easy walk and is right next to town, quiet and shallow, making it a good choice for families who want the comfort of Gustavia without the port traffic.
Anse de Grand Saline and Anse du Gouverneur are probably the two most photographed beaches on the island. Both are easy to access by tender, both have long stretches of sand, and somehow neither seems crowded, even during the busiest times of the year.
For guests who want more of a scene, Nikki Beach and Le Ti St Barth are must-dos on a St. Barts charter, especially in the run-up to Christmas and New Years, when the island’s entire social calendar seems to be built around offshore yachts.
When to go: St. Barth’s peak season and why timing matters The rental season here runs from December to April, but the Christmas to New Year period is really its own thing. This is when the island fills up, becomes the noisiest and, not coincidentally, when it becomes more difficult to book at short notice.
March brings the Bucket Regatta, worth catching if it’s classic and modern superyachts running side by side is your kind of afternoon. If you prefer anchorages closer to you, November and May tend to offer great weather with much less competition for space.

Whoever arranges the charter truly changes the outcome here, more than in most destinations. Choosing specialist yacht charter brokers in Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin and superyacht charter in general will provide you with an overview in the details.
Choose brokers who inspect the yachts they recommend in person, not from a brochure, and who also meet directly with the crews, because a charter lives or dies as much on the people who run the boat as the boat itself. Over the years, this has helped build a detailed picture of the market: prices, owner references, which crews run a tight ship, allowing brokers to match a guest with the right yacht rather than choosing the free one. This also means they can move quickly when something like a marina berth or fueling location needs to be sorted quickly, which is often the case in St. Barthélemy.
Look for MYBA members, MYBA being the Worldwide Yachting Association, whose standard contracts are used across the industry to keep things fair for both parties. For a St. Barths yacht charter, especially one built around Christmas and New Years, this combination, boats inspected in person, crew met directly and contracts held, tends to make the difference between a week that unfolds on its own and one that doesn’t.
Booking your superyacht charter Prices here follow the same form as in the rest of the Caribbean. A base charter fee for the yacht and crew, an advance provisioning allowance on top of about 30 to 40 percent to cover fuel, food, docks and anything else guests request along the way, and crew gratuities typically between 10 and 15 percent. As a rough guide, weekly rates for Caribbean superyachts range from around $40,000 for smaller crewed boats to several hundred thousand dollars per week for larger vessels with more comprehensive amenities. Saint-Barthélemy is at the top of this range in December and January in particular. Any broker worth using will walk you through these numbers properly before anything is signed, so nothing will surprise you once you’re already on board.
Where St. Barths really stands out from other destinations is specifically at Christmas and New Years. The Gustavia marina is small and the demand for docking on the night of December 31 is enormous, so much so that it is not uncommon for places to go a year in advance. If being moored in the port itself for New Year’s Eve is important to you, book it before the yacht is even confirmed. It’s true that it’s happening so quickly.
If the timing doesn’t work out for them, many guests now spend New Year’s Eve in St. Maarten, which has a much larger marina, then return to St. Barts the next day once things have calmed down a bit. This isn’t the initial plan for most people, but it works, and it still means catching both islands without spending all the prep chasing a full port.
That’s really what St. Barths comes down to, in my experience. An island that has kept its wild and natural Caribbean side intact, while becoming one of the most glamorous coastlines in the world. Planning well, especially as the holiday season approaches, is just the price you pay to see both sides of the coin.
