After initially airing on CBS as an annual show for 15 years, Paramount+ brought the project back shortly after it ended its run. Criminal Minds: Evolution is a rare case of a successful rebirth and move to a streaming platform, with the service clearly happy with its viewership performance for them. Mainly featuring characters from the original BAU team, Criminal Minds: Evolution subjected each lead profiler to their own challenges. All this while solving the complicated case of Elias Voit alias Sicarius.
Unlike their previous missions, the profilers were confronted by an entire network of serial killers led by the elusive Voit, a Seattle-based technology specialist who leads a double life as a devoted family man and a ruthless murderer. The case evolved into something more complex than the hunt for a criminal, as new details and new players were introduced into the plot. At the end of Criminal minds season 19Voit is ultimately reprimanded, but given his past, doubts remain as to whether he actually leaves.
Zach Gilford officially clarifies his character’s fate in a new interview with TV lineconfirming that he is done playing the serial killer in Criminal minds. While he was taken into custody by the FBI and is now incarcerated where he will serve the remainder of his sentence, the actor nevertheless keeps the door open to a possible return. When Criminal minds renamed Evolutionthe idea was to make the network darker, which it achieved. However, the change in format from 20 episodes to just 10 also changed its narrative approach, making it more serialized after being a procedural for so long. Despite the shorter length, each season was supposed to be about a main villain, which hasn’t really been the case since Voit’s story spanned four cycles.
NOW, Voit was there Criminal minds it’s officially donethere is no limit for the rest of the BAU. Ahead of Evolution season 4, the crime thriller has already renewed it for its fifth, proving that it is fully committed to continuing the story of the profilers. Showrunner Erica Messer and her team have to figure out what comes after the BAU after spending the last four years trying to make sense of Sicarius.
As Criminal minds enters a new era, he’s curious to what extent their experience with Voit will impact how BAU approaches its next cases. He developed a unique dynamic with almost everyone on the team, but he particularly bonded with Dave Rossi. Hopefully the series is able to return to this development, which effectively keeps the door open for Gilford’s return as Voit.
