Casualties reported after cable bridge collapse in India

At least 81 people have been killed and dozens injured or seriously injured after a cable bridge collapsed in India, which reportedly resulted in 400 water immersions.

The suspension bridge, which linked the banks of the Machchhu River to Morbi, in the Indian state of Gujarat, collapsed on Sunday evening, causing multiple injuries.

Hundreds of people were thrown into the river after its cables apparently broke, pictures show.

The bridge was reopened only four days ago after repairs and renovations.

"Due to the collapse of the bridge, several people fell into the river. A rescue operation is underway. According to reports, several people have been injured. They are being rushed to hospitals", said local MP and Minister of State Brijesh Merja.
