The battle to claim the iconic Claret Jug begins this weekend as the men’s major season reaches its climax with the Open at Royal Birkdale in Merseyside, England.
Scottie Scheffler returns to defend the crown he won last year at Royal Portrush and becomes the first back-to-back Open winner since Padraig Harrington in 2008. The American star will need to make a big improvement on his performance last weekend, with the world No.1 surprisingly missing the cut at the Scottish Open.
Meanwhile, Masters champion Rory McIlroy and British star Tommy Fleetwood are heavily backed by bookmakers to break the United States’ grip on this tournament, with four of the last five winners having come from America.
Scottie Scheffler won the iconic Claret Jug trophy at last year’s Open, finishing four shots ahead of fellow American Harris English.
