Mojang Studios and Merlin Entertainment team up to open an official studio Minecraft theme park, which they aptly named Minecraft World. Announced earlier today during the Minecraft Live showcase, Minecraft World is tentatively scheduled to open in 2027 and will apparently be merged with the pre-existing Chessington World of Adventures theme park in Greater London. It will even have its own roller coaster
According to the official statement posted on Merlin Entertainment’s website, Minecraft World will cost £50 million (just under $70 million) to develop and will feature “a world first.” Minecraft roller coasters, themed shops and restaurants, plus a host of fan favorites and ridiculous entertainment from the Minecraft universe.
Based on artwork images from Merlin Entertainment press releasethe theme park is still in the planning stages. Minecraft World will also apparently be designed in “collaboration with a selection of iconic items.” Minecraft creators to help bring the universe to life in the most authentic way possible,” although no specific “creator” has been announced at this time.
Minecraft World is not the first video game theme park to open in the last decade, as PokéPark Kanto in Japan and Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Orlando have opened in recent years. It is, however, the first video game theme park based on an official IP to open in the UK.
Personally, as a Brit, I would have much preferred the Pokémon Or Mario theme parks myself, but hey, I’m sure there are tens of thousands of Brits who are delighted to hear this news. It’s going to be a nightmare driving the M25 if it coincides with the release of the second Minecraft movie though.
