Adam Sandler Teases He Won't Look So Good In Upcoming Safdie Brothers Movie: 'It's Gonna Be Hard'

Welcome to this week's "Just for Variety"

After the success of "Uncut Gems", filmmaker brothers Josh and Benny Safdie and their star Adam Sandler have a lot to live with with their next collaboration. The trio announced in October that they were reuniting for an untitled film for Netflix.

While project details are under wraps, Sandler told me Monday at the Gotham Awards that he was going to have a "different look" than he ever had. "I can't say I'm going to look this good in it," Sandler said. "It's not a good time... It's going to be tough."

Regarding the script, Sandler would only say, "They work hard. Every time I speak, they say they work by hand."

Sandler starred in "Uncut Gems" as Howard Ratner, a sleazy New York City jeweler with an addictive game. It won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Leading Role while the Safdies took home the Best Director trophy.

The Safdies were in attendance at the Gotham Awards to help celebrate Sandler with a tribute to his career.

Sandler joked with me about the honor: "I was 17. I I was at NYU. Other kids, I was yelling at them, "The Gotham Awards are coming!" And they were like, "What is the Gotham Awards?" I was like, "Don't worry about it. "They're going to honor me.'”

Jim Parsons remembers when Ellen DeGeneres stepped out in 1997 with her now iconic Time magazine cover, including the title read "Yes, I'm gay".

"As much as it helped in the end, it was also fucking scary as that gay who wanted… a career for themselves, in the same path, in the same industry,” the actor tells me on this week's “Just for Variety” podcast, which will be released tomorrow. While Parsons' sexuality was an open secret in Hollywood for years, he didn't come out until 2012. Before that, I remember his team making it clear that he wouldn't talk about his private life during of interviews, even when he made his Broadway debut in 2011 playing a gay man in Larry Kramer's AIDS play "The Normal Heart."

Now he's starring in "Spoiler Alert," Michael Showalter's adaptation of journalist Michael's memoir Ausiello on her late husband Kit Cowan's battle with cancer. Parsons portrays Ausiello (who is Variety editor-in-chief TVLine brother) opposite "Fleabag" actor Ben Aldridge as Cowan. "There are a lot of gay characters I'm offered," says Parsons, who is also the film's producer. "The majority, I would say, that I'm offered are gay."
