Alexander McQueen RTW Spring 2023

Last spring, Sarah Burton looked up at the changing skies of London, staging the show under a transparent dome atop an east London car park. This year she went down to earth and zoomed in on the human form and the look and movement of women in her clothes.

Burton's landing was soft. She offered a slew of deconstructed silhouettes, light as air, and cut for flattery and ease of movement. They debuted under that same glass dome, which had been moved to the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, overlooking the River Thames.

The lacerated dresses appeared to be made of thick ribbons, while long asymmetrical leather skirts were cut to reveal a leg lightning bolt. Burton cut the backs of tailored suits and cut jackets and cropped frock coats, pairing the latter with a riff on McQueen trousers.

A master of pointed-shoulder tailoring, Burton has also ventured into new territory, s... inspiring from the world of athleisure.

A red knit bodysuit was fit for a 21st century superhero, while tops strappy straps peeked out from underneath dresses in printed faille or pleated tulle. Burton even cut a denim jacket like a bodysuit and paired it with low-rise jeans.

Burton said his goal is to celebrate individualism and empower women. "It's not a masculine look," the designer said of her approach. Instead, she aimed to make clothes for women living in today's world.

Burton said she wants her customers to feel good. "It's not about a dictatorial way of dressing, it's about individuality, finding personality and making them feel empowered," she said.

In this season of lavish embellishments, this collection was palette cleanser, though Burton sprinkled a sequin here and a colored fringe there.

She was also inspired by the surreal and colorful paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, whose work teems with bodies humans, in heaven, in hell and on earth.

Exquisite Bosch embroidery covered everything from boots and jumpsuits to cut-out ball gowns, and added a extra dose of richness to this collection for active women.
