'All MPs should be forced to work two weeks in factories and hospitals - even Liz Truss'

Tom McNeil, Assistant Police and Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands, is standing to be the Labor candidate in Tory-held Birmingham Northfield. He floats the idea of a two-week work experience for all MPs - even the Prime Minister

All newly elected and existing MPs must undertake a People's Apprenticeship, in which they must experience a number of different backgrounds to inform their decisions within the Houses of Parliament.

Whether an MP of lowly background or of Eton privilege, every elected member must undertake an apprenticeship once elected.

We've seen a lot of MPs act like they're above the law in recent months, and so no one should be given a free pass to the people's learning.

This means that even our next Prime Minister, whether Sunak or Truss, should be ready to don his PPE and work in the hallways of our hardest-hit hospitals or help teachers in classrooms overcrowded today.

Politicians from all political backgrounds would participate in what would hopefully be a privileged insight that informs their democratic mandates, rather than serving as a burden they must be seen to bear.

Lasting two to three weeks, the popular apprenticeship would see MPs get their hands dirty undertaking days of work experience in the public, private and third sectors.
