Alone in the Dark reboot pushed back to 2024 to avoid competition

Alone in the Dark, THQ Nordic's reboot of the classic survival horror game of the same title, has been delayed to January 16, 2024. The game joins the ranks of several other delayed games from the busy October, with the announcement read, "Horror games thrive on the strange embrace of loneliness, something that's impossible to achieve in a gaming month as busy as October."

THQ Nordic has been explicit about its intentions, saying in a statement that the delay avoids bringing Alone in the Dark too close to its fellow horror title Alan Wake 2: "Our intention is to avoid competing with the wake of Alan's epic outing and escape the dazzling city skyline adorned by Spider-Man's graceful sways. We aim to be truly alone in the dark as much as possible... This expansion will have a dual purpose: not only it will allow us to meticulously hone the gameplay experience, but it will also give us the opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in the remarkable releases of October."

The October game schedule has been changed significantly over the past few weeks as game companies try to avoid coming together. Ubisoft moved the release date of Assassin's Creed Mirage from October 12 to October 7, while Remedy pushed back the launch of Alan Wake 2 from October 17 to October 27. This all seems to be to avoid mid-month triple-A releases, which include Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (both launching October 20).

Even before October, game publishers changed their schedules to accommodate other major releases. Larian Studios has pushed back the release of Baldur's Gate 3 to August 31-3 to give it more breathing room before Bethesda's Starfield launches September 1 in Early Access (and September 6 in general).
