Andy Murray bounces back from Wimbledon disappointment in style with dominant USA win

Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray advanced to the second round of the 2022 Hall of Fame Open on Tuesday after beating Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-0.

Murray, 35, continued his grass-court season with a rebound in his step and made relatively short work of American opponent Querrey. Despite a break of serve in the opener of the match, he fought back by sealing three breaks in the opening set.

He followed that up by immediately breaking Querrey in the second salvo en route to a straight-sets win. The result was the perfect answer after Murray failed to get past the second round at SW19 this year, converting all six breakout opportunities he faced.

Querrey, 34, knocked out Murray from the quarter-finals of Wimbledon 2017 in their last encounter on grass. However, the momentum shifted firmly in the latter's favor when he saw a bagel result in the second set to advance quickly.

His victory also had added significance, given that it was Querrey's fellow American John Isner who knocked Murray out of contention at Wimbledon. The veteran's reward for Tuesday's confident performance is a second round showdown against Australian Max Purcell.

Purcell, 24, made his main draw debut at Wimbledon this year but saved his main feat for men's doubles. There he was crowned champion alongside partner Matthew Ebden, their first major doubles team title.

Murray traveled to Newport, Rhode Island for the first time since 2006 and is competing in his third Hall of Fame Open. However, he never managed to reach the final of the ATP Tour 250 event.

That could change in 2022 given his last posting, where he limited Querrey to winning just 39% of his points on the first serve. The second set proved particularly ruthless as Murray gave up just eight points combined.

Tournament Director Brewer Rowe recently detailed the increased buzz surrounding the Newport event thanks to Murray's involvement. It's easy to see why this might be the case based on Tuesday's posting.
