'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania' Ends VOD Race #1 for 'Avatar: The Way of Water'

Disney has maintained its lead on all VOD charts, now with a different title. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” replaced “Avatar: The Way of Water” (both $19.99) as No. 1 after a four-week run that came 100 days after its debut in halls. "Quantumania" was delayed 60 days after its disappointing domestic box office of $213 million. Both films stand out from the recent home game standard before 31 days.

It's not yet clear when "John Wick: Chapter 4" (Lionsgate), "Air" (MGM) or, more importantly, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" (Universal) will make the jump. "Super Mario Bros." could be available within two weeks (based on the 31-day window set in 2020 by recently ousted NBC/Universal CEO Jeff Shell). Any one of these films could prevent "Quantumania" from establishing a two-plus-week streak at No. 1.

Another new movie entered all three lists, which reflected 14 titles among the 30 slots. Sundance grand prize winner "One Thousand and One" (Focus) grossed less than $3.4 million in theaters (with a 926-theatrical release), with hopes it would spark interest in House. It's #8 in Vudu, which ranks by revenue, and a substantial return on every $19.99 view goes a long way towards recouping the smallest investment in an independent film.

Creed III (MGM), '65' (Sony), and 'Shazam: Fury of the Gods' (Warner Bros. Discovery) still top the charts, all at $19.99. These titles join the two Disney films that appear on the three charts. It's worth noting that this "65," featuring Adam Driver lost in space, only made $32 million theatrically. However, her home performance suggests a much larger theatrical success.

Sony doesn't have an in-house streamer (and the associated expense), but it still seems to max out underperforming titles. Concrete example: four months after its weak theatrical release of less than 24 million dollars, “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” is number 1 on Netflix. The studio has a streaming deal with Netflix, but that turnaround is faster than usual.
