While recent months of staggering oil prices, inflation warnings and now recession have highlighted the high cost of working and living in the UK, is this anything new?< /p>

The past decade has been marked by widespread wage stagnation in both the private and public sectors, with the average British worker seeing a real pay cut of 3% over the previous decade and wages remaining below their 2008 peak.

To make matters worse, this year alone workers face another 3% drop in cash as wages lag inflation while the economy is set to contract for more than a year , prompting Labor to say the Tories are "losing control of the economy".

The UK is unique in the developed world for paying its workers so badly, being one of only five countries in the OECD, which has 35 countries, to have seen wages fall in the past 10 years .

At the same time, HMRC data shows that the salary of the top 1% of employees and senior managers continues to exceed that of the lowest paid. Including bonuses, the wages of the top 1% grew five times faster than those of the bottom 10%.
