Missing the best piece of broccoli?

Broccoli is a popular winter vegetable, but missing the tastiest bit?

Fruit Nerd Thanh Truong is here to give you his tips on how to get the most out of your broccoli, including how to choose, store and eat the vegetable.

When trying to find the best broccoli, Truong recommends looking for consistent color and bead size on the florets.

Avoid broccoli with yellow and orange spots or other discoloration.

You also want to make sure the florets are firm and don't easily detach from the main stem.

"It's a sign that [the broccoli] has been stored incorrectly and it has dehydrated," he says.

"It won't be crispy and crunchy to eat. "

The broccoli stalk can also give you an indication of the taste of the vegetable.

Mr. Truong says that when broccoli has a thicker stalk, more nutrients reach the florets.

"[Thicker stalks] are a good sign of a plant healthy, and healthy plants mean better-tasting produce,” he says.

To keep your broccoli fresh for as long as possible, Truong recommends not not leave broccoli on the bench or on a shelf in the refrigerator, as it will dehydrate.

"The best way is to keep it in a plastic bag, but do not tie it, because broccoli won't be able to breathe," he says.

"So loosely seal [the bag] and put it in the fridge, so it stays crisp and fresh and can last up to a week. ."

If you don't want to use a plastic bag, Mr. Truong says you can also chop the broccoli side up and place it in a container with a vent hole at the top to broccoli can breathe.

Because broccoli likes the cold, Truong recommends storing it in the coldest part of your refrigerator.

"It's probably in your crisper or out the back where fresh air comes out,” he says. aria-labelledby="102651174" data-component="Figure" data-uri="coremedia://imageproxy/102651174">Two hands close the lid of a plastic container with broccoli inside .Mr. Truong says broccoli can be stored in a plastic bag or in a ventilated container in the refrigerator.
