Some people in extremely cold parts of the United States are switching to heat pumps from oil or gas furnaces. But others aren't convinced these devices are right for them.

As the world moves to electrify everything from cars to heating in a bid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, heat pumps have become more popular.

I covered alternative energy for the New York Times for five years, and utilities and energy in general for nearly a decade ago. The energy transition is an opportunity to explore new technologies such as heat pumps and their impact on electricity demand, monthly energy bills and home comfort.

I would like to hear from people who have purchased heat pumps, especially readers who live in very cold climates. I'd also like to hear from people who haven't bought one because they think heat pumps are too expensive or don't meet their heating needs.
