Arsenal plot surprise move for Chelsea flop amid Real Madrid interest

Arsenal are interested in signing Chelsea striker Timo Werner this summer amid interest from Real Madrid, according to reports.

The Germany international signed for the Blues from RB Leipzig in 2020 for £47.5m but was a big disappointment for the west London side.

His goalscoring record of 23 goals in 89 games, including only ten Premier League goals, is even more frustrating for Chelsea fans given his exploits as a goalscorer for the German national team.

Will Chelsea get a transitional season? Barcelona left them unprepared

24 goals in 53 appearances for Germany and 95 in 159 for RB Leipzig means Werner is attracting plenty of interest despite a couple of disappointing seasons at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal opted to renew Eddie Nketiah's contract this summer, while they also brought Gabriel Jesus to the club from Manchester City, but it remains to be seen if they will add another striker to their squad.< /p>

If they do, it could be Werner, according to Spanish website Defensa Central, with the Gunners interested in bringing the forward to Emirates Stadium.

Speaking of Werner, Defensa Central claim Arsenal and Juventus are "following in his footsteps", but Real Madrid have the upper hand if they move.

It is claimed that Chelsea are "trying to find a destination for Werner" with a move for the German international "the most feasible" for Real Madrid among the options of Benjamin Sesko, Amine Gouiri and Leroy Sane.

The website adds that Chelsea are asking €54m for Werner, with Real Madrid previously interested in signing him before he moved to Chelsea two years ago.

And former Premier League striker Noel Whelan believes the Premier League has proven too 'tough' for Werner, with the 26-year-old possibly suitable for different leagues.

"When he arrived, everyone expected great things from him," Whelan told Football Insider.

"We haven't seen anything like it. I think the Premier League has snuck up on him, and he realizes how difficult it is.

"You may be fast or have had success in other leagues, but you play against international defenders week after week in England.

"He disappointed the Chelsea fans and was certainly a disappointment to the board - considering the money they paid for him.

“Now he complains about him. He makes small comments.

"At the end of the day, if he's not happy in the Premier League, he has to go. Pace alone can't help you."
