Ashes player ratings: Australian cricket star scores 1/10 as England win third Test

Harry Brook announced himself on the Ashes stage with a game-winning shot for England that kept the series alive and delivered another memorable highlight for Headingley. Brook beat with great maturity as he fired a 75 of steel, taking a decisive part of the 251-point target and igniting this summer's rivalry, leaving Australia 2-1 ahead with two to play.

The Yorkshireman fell with 21 still needed as Third Test sank into nervous tension, but Mark Wood overcame the anxiety with a spirited 16 not knocked out and Chris Woakes made a remarkable return to the Test arena crushing the winning races towards the delirious Western Terrace to finish undefeated on 32.

England's three-wicket victory was achieved despite Ben Stokes being dismissed for just 13, with a slight gash in the side of the leg robbing the hosts of their inspirational captain and the architect of their miracle Ashes 2019 at the start of the decisive final session.

But in Brook they had a new hero, ready to carry the burden to the top floor before passing it on to Woakes and Wood - making an emphatic first impression on their belated series introductions.

Usman Khawaja - 6. Helpful contribution to round two delivered in his usual measured and unflappable style.

Marnus Labuschagne - 6. He fought to get in twice but then pulled out - his Ashes story so far.

Travis Head - 9. A brilliant Stokes-style counter-attack under the Saturday night lights gave Australia a defensible target.

Mitchell Marsh - 9. First inning century when called up to the side kept Australia in the game.

Alex Carey - 5. Targeted by the Headingley mob after his Lord's antics and shrunk in the spotlight.

English player ratings - by PA

ZAK CRAWLEY: Scores of 33 and 44 promised a lot, but both times his advantage was taken after Mitch Marsh hung the carrot on the outside. Four scores over 30 in six innings but only one fifty. 6 (out of 10).

BEN DUCKETT: Endured a quiet test after two fifties at Lord's. Helped England get off to a positive start in the 251 chase but was stopped short after Mitchell Starc blew his front pad. 5

HARRY BROOK: Catapulted to the first drop after Ollie Pope's injury, but settled back into his usual five in the second set, responding with a claimed 75 that broke the back of a nervous chase. 8

JOE ROOT: Make two regulation first-slip catches, the first against Marsh costing England a whopping 112 points. In then out, fired twice by Pat Cummins, who's had his number 11 now. 4

JONNY BAIRSTOW: Tipped to make Australia pay after Lord's, Bairstow lost three more catches, two carts and a hard. The lack of confidence with the gloves seems to seep into his stick. 4

BEN STOKES: Produced another colossal shot as his brawny 80 dragged England to parity, but an increasingly squeaky lower body, which limited his batting-only role, continues to spark controversy concerns. 8

MOEEN ALI: Provided crucial containment to tie Australia down in the second leg and trapped Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith to reach 200 Test wickets. The promotion to three in the hunt did not bear fruit. 7

CHRIS WOAKES: Impressive comeback after 16 months away. Six wickets, all in the Australian top seven, playing at good pace and for long stretches. An unreleased instrumental 32 brought England home and he deservedly hit the winners. 9

MARK WOOD: Enjoyed his best test in England with blistering speeds, hitting 96.5mph, and a hostility that unsettled every Australian batter in his path. Celebrated a first five-wicket run in England as he had two crucial – as well as entertaining – cameos with the bat. 9

STUART BROAD: Maintaining his stranglehold on David Warn...
