Aston Villa 1-2 Stevenage: Fourth-tier Boro come from behind to stun Emery's men

League Two promotion chaser Stevenage celebrated the biggest shock of the FA Cup third round after scoring two late goals to claim a stunning 2-1 win at Aston Villa.

Boro midfielder Dean Campbell fired a spectacular stoppage-time winner at Villa Park after Jamie Reid's 88th-minute equalizer from the penalty spot.

Villa had been leading since Morgan Sanson's 33rd-minute opener but endured nervous moments even before the sensational late rebound as the visitors' Steve Evans were denied a Danny Rose goal for off -game and hit the crossbar through Luke Norris.

With time running out, Reid coolly converted from 12 yards out after Villa midfielder Leander Dendoncker was sent off for knocking Campbell down in the box.

And the afternoon ended in embarrassment for Unai Emery's Premier League side as Campbell beat Robin Olsen at the near post after a short turn to earn Stevenage a win famous and a fourth round trip to Stoke.

Unai Emery immediately targeted silverware when he was appointed to Villa Park in October, but Villa crashed out on another early exit.

They saw plenty of ball early but only had the tame effort of Douglas Luiz to show it and that allowed the visitors to scare them off.

Exactly 12 years ago Stevenage knocked Newcastle out of the FA Cup and they were dreaming of another upset after 17 minutes.

Boro worked the ball well down the left and Luke Norris crossed for an unmarked Danny Rose to come in, only to have the celebrations cut short by an offside flag on Norris.

It was a warning for Villa, who had yet to click, and Philippe Coutinho's deflected effort was easily caught by Taye Ashby-Hammond, with the Brazilian also firing wide.

It had been an inauspicious opening half an hour from Villa as they struggled to break through the confident and organized visitors.

In the end, it was the only quality of the half that unlocked Stevenage as Emery's side took a barely deserved lead after 32 minutes.

Coutinho, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings were involved in a quick one-touch build-up before the latter slipped past Sanson and he fired in his first goal for Villa from 16 yards out.

Stevenage remained fearless in the face of Norris' ambitious effort from the corner of the penalty area by clipping the bar as Steve Evans' side sought the reward their composed and positive display deserved.

All hopes of a comeback were all but extinguished when Bailey's close-range effort deflected wide immediately after the break as Villa emerged with renewed vigor.

Stevenage remained robust, however, and showed the confidence of a team that has now lost just two of its last 23 games.

They frustrated Villa, who on the hour were well in the visitors' half, and Calum Chambers pushed wide after 66 minutes.

Bailey fired on it but, with five minutes left, Villa imploded. Robin Olsen got Dendoncker in trouble on the edge of the box and he was robbed by Campbell.

The midfielder fired forwards to the back as he entered the box and, after referee Graham Scott initially gave a free kick, he awarded a penalty and sent off Dendoncker.< /p>

After a VAR check, Reid buried the kick and the best was to come two minutes later when Villa fell asleep from a short corner and Campbell beat Olsen to the near post to win it.
