At least seven people were killed and 20 injured after a gas explosion destroyed three residential buildings in Kurdistan, it has been reported.

Rescue teams search through the rubble at night for survivors in the city of Sulaymaniyah with footage showing scenes of destruction and horrified residents watching.

Sulaymaniyah Civil Defense said 10 teams were working their way through the rubble with reports that more than 10 people, including children, may be under the rubble.

Many people took to social media to express their sadness at what happened and also shared photos of some of the victims, appearing to show that several children died.

Three residential buildings reportedly exploded due to a leak from a liquid gasoline tank that was on top of one of the buildings in the neighborhood.

Officials said the death toll currently stands at seven with another 20 injured, tweeted

One of the destroyed buildings is believed to have had three floors and there are reports that 20 people were inside one of the blocks.
