Bárbara Martínez sings and dances flamenco Tuesdays at Sala Astoria

Bárbara Martínez is a flamenco jazz singer and dancer based in New York.

Bárbara comes from a family of artists including Argentinian tango singer/actress Morenita Rey and Libertad Lamarque, and Venezuelan sculptor Rafael Martínez and Amelia Arenas.

She sang at the Metropolitan Opera as a child. His flamenco group performed at Carnegie Hall.

It seems like Bárbara can sing anything. Singing in Spanish and Portuguese is difficult. Both are similar, but both are different. We have known Bárbara for a long time and we are a little impressed by how her artistic talent continues to grow.

Barbara Martinez in New York

Bárbara Martínez sings and dances Argentine, Venezuelan, and Spanish New York flamenco at Flamenco Tuesdays at Sala Astoria, a Spanish restaurant in Astoria, Queens, on Tuesdays, January 10, 17, and 24, 2023 at 7 p.m. salarestaurants.com

Flamenco is also American

Being American, Martínez has flamenco rumba in his bones.

"Pure" Spanish flamenco is already a mixture of Roma, Muslim, Jewish, African and Spanish influences. The Spanish colonizers brought the Spanish canción with them from their home port of Cadiz in Andalusia, Spain. It wasn't flamenco yet, but it was one of the roots.

The Spanish Treasure Galleons brought the sounds and rhythms of Havana, Cuba back to Spain. It's flamenco rumba. These are the cantes de ida y vuelta (round trip songs).

This is Bárbara's world. She mixes South American, Middle Eastern and Sephardic music with jazz. She even sings bossa nova in Brazilian Portuguese.

This is who we are as New Yorkers. We use the old Venezuelan, Argentinian, Spanish labels, whatever; but once you live in New York, you're not really that anymore. You are a New Yorker.

Bárbara Martínez is an incarnation of New York. She mixes the mixtures together in a very beautiful way.
