'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer': An overview of all the box office records broken

As Hollywood Studios, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA stalled in job talks - streaming residuals being a big bone of contention - the theatrical side of the business has exploded, with Barbenheimer grossing over $511 million worldwide , including 235.5 million domestic dollars. Never before in the history of Hollywood films have two films reached over $100 million (Barbie) and $50 million (Oppenheimer) at the domestic box office.

Sunday, Barbie from Warner Bros. has a domestic opening of $155 million, including $182 million overseas, while Universal's Oppenheimer made $80.5 million domestically and another $93.7 million overseas.

Comscore this AM says this weekend for all movies in the US hit $301.6 million, making it only the fourth time in the industry that the domestic market for all pictures has topped $300 million. This is the biggest opening since December 17, 2021, when Spider-Man: No Way Home topped all charts ($281.8 million), and the biggest since pre-pandemic April 26, 2019, when Avengers: End Game led all titles to a record-high $357 million weekend.
