The Barranquilla Carnival 2023 is one of the great carnivals in the world

The Barranquilla Carnival is a Colombian expression of Caribbean carnival traditions. It is the second largest carnival celebration in the world after Rio Carnival with over five hundred folk groups and over one and a half million celebrants. It is also the biggest festival in Colombia.

In 2003 the carnival of Barranquilla was proclaimed by UNESCO as one of the masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of the humanity.

Important characters include King Momo, Carnival Queen, María Moñitos and Cayman Man. Marimonda is a unique character from Barranquilla.

There are official events, but street parties erupt in open areas called vervains everywhere during the month of Carnival. Some of the most popular street parties are at El Bambú in Barrio Olaya, El Polvorín in Barrio San José, Pleno Sol in Barrio La Uníon, La Gustadera in Barrio Las Nieves and La Puya loca in Barrio Los Pinos.
