The Defense Secretary made the trip amid fears that Putin could detonate a nuclear weapon. Defense Secretary Ben Wallace embarked on an urgent trip to Washington amid fears Vladimir Putin might detonate a nuclear bomb over the Black Sea.

Comments from Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said the conversations Wallace would have earlier in the day were "incredible" after his trip on Monday.

Mr. Heappey said these were "the kind of conversations that [are] really amazing" and remarked "the fact that we are at a time when these kinds of conversations are needed".

The quickly organized meeting will see Wallace travel to the US capital to discuss "shared security concerns".

Little other information about the meeting was shared, and US and UK officials provided few details.

Wallace left for the United States on Monday (

A defense source said, "The Secretary of Defense is in Washington DC to discuss common security issues, including Ukraine.

"He will visit his Pentagon counterpart and senior White House officials."
